Interview follow up

Question

I had an interview today and had a genuinely good time meeting the interviewer and talking. Is it appropriate to follow up with a one or two sentence "Thank you for your time" type of message (e-mail or actual letter). I'm not looking for any special favors, just wanted to come full circle just like on a job interview.

Additionally, should I reiterate why I'm a good fit for the program and how excited I am about it, or is that going overboard?

I thought I posted my answer earlier this week. It is not only appropriate to follow up, it's a definite must. An email is fine, but a written note might be a little more personal. It also wouldn't hurt to reiterate a few of the points you discussed in the interview, just to help the interviewer remember you and the interview.

Thanks for the tip!

Before I read your response, I saw on clearadmit.com that a follow up note is necessary, but that e-mail is preferable because a written, mailed letter may not get to he interviewer until after they've submitted their comments to the adcom.

Consequently, I already wrote a brief thank you e-mail, reiterating my interest in the program and referencing something personal that we talked about. I would have preferred to send something in the mail, but wanted the interview to get my follow up as quickly as possible in case she was submitting comments to the adcom.

Now that I read your reply, it sounds like I should have sent a hand-written note instead.

Question: Should I ALSO send the hand written note even though I already sent an e-mail, or would that just be plain annoying to the interviewer? If sending a hand written note is necessary in addition to my e-mail, should it say exactly the same thing? I'm afraid to sound like I'm begging for anything in these letters, so I kept my e-mail short and sweet.

Your email should be fine. It *is* good to get your thank-you to the interviewer to him/her as soon as possible, but I doubt it has an impact on the interviewer's adcom report ("Oh, and he sent me a thank-you email too!"). 

It probably would not hurt to *also* send a handwritten note. You could word it slightly differently to avoid the feeling of redundancy. However, if I gave you the impression that there's a big difference between an emailed and a handwritten thank-you note, then I apologize--there is not. A handwritten letter in addition to your email will not impact your admission chances.
