I think this question is better suited for admissions consultants.
2 years is usually the minimum of acceptable/recommended work experience.... you would be on the lower end of it but it is good enough (as long as you made those years count and can demonstrate that you have the maturity & leadership level required)

Thank you for the reply. In the past 2.6 years, I can say that I have matured up as a professional and had managed small teams for short period of times with accolades from team leader. Well, I am in a dilemma so as to attempt the exam now or to do the same after working for 1 more year. What would you suggest?

GMAT scores are valid for 5 years so you should start preparing when you think that you're ready to dedicate a good amount of time for the next 3-4 months to your prep. Ideally the earlier you're done with your GMAT the better it is because it gives you sufficient time to focus on the other aspects of your application which are as important as your GMAT score.

Well in that case I can prepare and attempt the exam in 6 months and then keep working IT for another 1 - 2 years and then apply for different B-schools right? Is this suggested or does it bring in some negativity in the eye of B-schools, for applying 2 years after taking the exam ?

Well if you have 2 years and six months now, it means you will have 3 by application and four by matriculation which is enough to apply for sure...

So take the text in the coming months, and if you get that score you will be comfy to apply this year if you so desire...

Yes, applying to business schools 1-2 years after taking the GMAT is not uncommon and business schools don't have any issue with that.
