I am an international student, and I'd like to work in Salt Lake City post-mba (my girlfriend is there, I love the place with beautiful scenery, I don't mind the LDS-dominant culture, and it seems relatively safer than most cities in the US), so:

1. Is BYU MBA the best choice here, since it's the #1 school in Utah and even in the entire mountain west region?
2. I want to switch career to corporate finance, and BYU seems to place very well in this (their strength in accounting is definitely a plus), does anyone know how the MBA job market in SLC is?
3. BYU's tuition is amazingly cheap, and if I can do it with an MBA from there, is it necessary to try so hard just to get into a Top 16 school? What's the benefit of me attending a school like Cornell over BYU if all I want is to stay in Utah?

To answer the bolded question, not much benefit beyond the Ivy branding. And honestly the branding is kind of wasted if your goal is to stay in Utah. BYU is a regional school but places well in the mountain west. If the companies you want to work for recruit there and you're sure you won't want to leave the area immediately post MBA then BYU is plenty good enough.

Sounds like you've made a solid case for BYU. If the school gets you to where you want to be, go for it.

Hey, thanks for the reply, but one thing keeps bothering me though: I'm not sure how strong SLC market is, and wonder if I will be forced to get a job elsewhere. Is there any native Utahn that can share some insight on this?

Thanks, but I'd like to know what I would potentially miss if not attending a higher-ranked school like Cornell and UCLA.

Can anyone tell the difference between a top 16 and a top 30 when it comes to corporate finance recruiting? IBD or MBB consulting is out of the equation, so what are the advantages of attending those elite schools?

I'd say the two biggest advantages:
1) caliber of company you have access to working for after graduation
2) increased location options for employment

If 2 isn't a big deal to you then I think that you'll be fine with BYU.

In terms of corporate finance, only the locations of companies you will have access to. Top 14 have national reach, 15 and on are more regional. Cornell is semi-national, UCLA is regional. However, your chance of working in Utah after MBA is probably better at UCLA just because it's closer to Utah. Your chance of working in Utah is much better at BYU.
