Is international WE important? [#permalink]

Nationality: colombian
Ugrad: 75% gpa in Mechanical Eng. at top program in Colombia, studies abroad in Europe as well
WE: 2 years co-op in fortune500 CPG company.
GMAT: 720 with strong quant
EC: ngo founded, politics involvement, student government during a year.

Right now I have 3 job offers in different locations and was thinking if international experience is really an asset when eventually applying to a top mba program in the future. I'm aware that every work position have its pros and cons so I'm not making my choice based in this factor. In the end I'm choosing what's best for my professional and personal development.

So the question would be if an international work experience would improve my application profile vs a work experience in a top consulting firm in Colombia. Would it be irrelevant taking in consideration that I already studied abroad for a year?

Finally, supposing I perform excellent in whichever job I take. What are my odds applying to a top mba program given my Hispanic ethnicity and my low 75% GPA(not sure how the schools will make the conversion).

Thanks for your valuable time.

I think you should take the job offer that best aligns with your goals and appeals to you most, regardless of its location. As an applicant from Columbia you *already* have a strong international profile as far as U.S. and many non-U.S. schools are concerned. Your additional year overseas only enhances that, and if the firm you join in Columbia has a recognizable international brand then B-schools will have no "doubts" about the quality of your work experience. As a general rule, while a U.S. applicant must leave the country to gain international experience, someone applying to a U.S. B-school from an underrepresented foreign country already has an international profile. Concentrate instead on deepening your leadership experiences in and outside of work.

Hope this helps,
