Well, I don't know what do you mean by "essential".

IR surely is not an optional part of the GMAT. It's not as important and the Quant and Verbal sections, but getting an awful IR score will not help you application.

Yes, go to mba.com and down the official software called GMATprep. It comes with 2 full CAT exams. They're as close to the real thing as you can get.

Score is valid for five years from the date of test taken

say 26/dec/2016 test day means your score is valid upto 26/dec/21

Re: How to start studying the verbal part ? any suggestions? [#permalink]
Hi Gido,

There is a Verbal section on the forum - I suggest you check it out and read through the content. https://gmatclub.com/forum/gmat-verbal-section-11/?fl=menu

What worked for me is a combination of the following:

-Manhattan GMAT [MGMAT] Sentence Correction 6th edition (literally a bible for GMAT SC)
-MGMAT Critical Reasoning, and if you want, get the Reading Comprehension
-GMAC Official Guide (holy grail for official practice questions)
-memorize idioms using flashcards (you can find some on gmatclub or on magoosh.com)
-Know tenses and parallel structure by heart - this is the most commonly tested on GMAT verbal
-Dedicate time. Learning verbal is not a quick process - allocate enough time to do LOTS of practice questions using GMAC Official Guide and question banks from Magoosh.com and Gmatclub. Review your wrong answers to understand why you picked the wrong answer, why the correct answer is right, and apply learnings to future questions
-practice practice practice

Re: How to start studying the verbal part ? any suggestions? [#permalink]
Hi Gido6666,

The SC section is the easiest verbal section to make improvements on. Once you understand how to think and approach this question type, there are only so many ways you can be tested. Here at GMAT Pill we developed the 10 core frameworks which detail the 10 ways to approach GMAT sentence corrections.

Here is a sample video detailing one of the core frameworks: https://www.gmatpill.com/gmat-practice-t ... stion/2184

The RC score could definitely use some improvement. To improve RC - you really need visual guidance. Don't read articles about how to improve reading. You improve by actually doing or watching someone else do.

That's why you might find these video walkthroughs helpful: https://www.gmatpill.com/practicequestio ... tions.html

For CR, we recommend a visual framework approach to help you understand the complex short passages and how each item relates to each other.

Here is a video describing the visual framework approach: https://www.gmatpill.com/criticalreasoni ... Estate.mp4

Best of luck on your studies!
