Is x > 1?

1) (x+1)(|x| - 1) > 0

2) |x| < 5

Hi,

I am sure the Q must have been already discussed. Not likely that a GMAT prep Q is yet to be discussed.
Pl search before posting.

Let's see the statements...
1) (x+1)(|x| - 1) > 0
This means both terms will be of same sign...
A) Say both are POSITIVE..
X+1>0.....X>-1....(I)
|x|-1>0....|x|>1... x>1 or x<-1....(II)
From I and II, x>1..
B) Say both are NEGATIVE..
X+1<0.....X<-1....(I)
|x|-1<0....|x|<1... x<1 or x>-1....(II)
From I, x<-1 but from II, x is between -1 and 1..
So no overlap between two solution, hence not valid..

Thus only x>1 is possible.
Sufficient

2) |x| < 5
X<5 and -x<5 or x>-5
Thus x can be anything between -5 and 5..
Insufficient

A
