Hi all,
Here is my debrief on ISB essays - please inbox me if you want my essays as a sample for reference
1. Write an essay debrief and make a video for ISB essays
Essay 1: Provide an honest portrayal of yourself, emphasizing your strengths and weaknesses. Highlight the key elements that have shaped your personal journey. Give relevant illustrations as needed. (400 words)
ISB has changed the essay topic this year to focus more on the self-reflection of an individual. Use personal stories to make the essay appealing. Remember, authenticity is key to capturing the attention of admissions committees and standing out among a competitive pool of applicants.
1. Reflect on Your Personal Journey: Start by taking a step back and reflecting on your life experiences, both professional and personal. Consider the significant events, milestones, challenges, and successes that have shaped you as an individual. This introspection will help you identify the key elements that have influenced your personal growth and development. Jot all of them down on a note, then choose which ones would justify strengths/weaknesses for this essay
2. Emphasize Your Strengths: Identify and showcase your unique strengths that make you a standout candidate. Consider your professional accomplishments, leadership abilities, problem-solving skills, and any other qualities that demonstrate your potential for success in the MBA program. Be specific and provide relevant illustrations or examples that highlight your strengths in action.
3. Address Your Weaknesses Honestly: While it may be tempting to portray yourself as flawless, addressing your weaknesses honestly is crucial for a well-rounded essay. Refrain from the popular way of fake-turning your strengths as weaknesses, something like, "Oh, I work too hard to have a work life balance". This is not really going to help, the Admissions committee is smart to figure this out. Admissions committees appreciate self-awareness and growth mindset. Identify one or two genuine areas of improvement and explain how you have recognized and worked on overcoming them. Emphasize the steps you have taken to improve or the lessons you have learned.
4. Use Relevant Illustrations: Support your essay with relevant and specific illustrations that provide depth to your narrative. Use concrete examples to demonstrate your strengths, weaknesses, and personal growth. These could include professional achievements, leadership roles, instances where you learned from failure, or instances where you demonstrated resilience or adaptability that you jotted down earlier. It would be better if you connected the strengths and weaknesses to your MBA plan
5. Use relevant frameworks - Tailor the frameworks to suit your own experiences and style of writing
Eg. Challenge - Growth - Lessons Learned
1. Challenge: Identify and describe a significant challenge or adversity you've faced. Explain the context, the impact it had on you, and the initial weaknesses it exposed.
2. Growth: Discuss how you responded to the challenge and the specific steps you took to address your weaknesses. Highlight your strengths and resilience during this growth process. Provide relevant illustrations and examples that showcase your ability to learn and adapt.
3. Lessons Learned: Reflect on the lessons you've learned from the challenge and the growth you've experienced. Share how these lessons have influenced your personal and professional development. Discuss how they have shaped your values, perspectives, and aspirations.
4. Present and Future: Transition to the present and discuss your current strengths and weaknesses. Be honest and self-aware in evaluating yourself. Connect these qualities to the lessons learned and growth achieved, emphasizing your readiness for an MBA program.

Essay 2: Contemplate two distinct situations—one where you experienced success and another where you faced failure. Delve into the personal and interpersonal lessons you learned from these instances. (400 words)
If you had written the first essay, some of the preparation can be reused for this essay. Go through the list of your life stories, to find contrasting stories - one depicting your success and another your failure. Clearly define what success and failure means to you.
Describe the Success: Begin by describing the situation of success. Clearly explain the context, your role, and the challenges you encountered. Dive into the actions you took, highlighting your strengths, skills, and decision-making abilities that contributed to the positive outcome. Be specific and provide relevant illustrations to demonstrate the impact of your success.
Elaborate on Lessons learned : Reflect on the personal lessons you learned from the successful situation. What insights did you gain about your own capabilities, values, or work ethic? Did it reinforce your strengths or reveal areas for improvement? Discuss how this success shaped your self-perception and motivated you to aim higher in future endeavors. Examine the interpersonal dynamics and collaborations involved in the successful situation. How did you communicate, collaborate, and influence others to achieve success? Discuss the importance of teamwork, leadership, and relationship-building skills. Share how these experiences taught you valuable lessons in effective collaboration and relationship management.
Describe the Failure: Shift the focus to the situation of failure. Clearly describe the circumstances, your role, and the challenges you faced. Acknowledge the impact of the failure and take responsibility for your actions or decisions. Avoid blaming others and focus on self-reflection and growth.
Again Lessons learned: Reflect on the personal lessons learned from the failure. What insights did you gain about your limitations, areas for improvement, or blind spots? How did this experience impact your resilience, perseverance, or adaptability? Discuss how this failure taught you important lessons about self-awareness and the value of embracing challenges.
Connect Success and Failure: In the conclusion, tie together the personal and interpersonal lessons learned from both situations. Emphasize how these experiences have influenced your growth, shaped your values and aspirations, and prepared you for the challenges of an MBA program. Discuss how you will apply these insights in future leadership roles and collaborative environments.
Conclude connecting this to your MBA dream as well.
Essay 3 (optional) Given your previous experience and future aspirations, how do you plan to use the PGP at ISB to fulfill your professional goals? Note: It is not necessary for you to write this essay. Please use this space only if there is something really significant that you would like us to know. (250 words)
ISB's decision to make the goals essay optional may come as a surprise. However, it presents a valuable opportunity for applicants to showcase their clarity of purpose and alignment with the program. It is best to use this opportunity and write this essay in a crisp fashion, highlighting where you are in your career, why MBA?, why ISB?, and what your short term and long term goals are.
By effectively connecting your past, present, and future aspirations, and demonstrating your understanding of ISB's offerings, you can create a compelling essay. You may want to do a function/industry change, but highlight the transferable skills as the connecting thread in that case.
Do your research about ISB, its courses, USP, and try to include them briefly in your essay. That shows your understanding of the program and its relevance.
