Hello ak21,

The good news is that ISB appreciates diversity in profiles and you have that going all through for you. A score upwards of 710 on the GMAT should put you in a good position; however, no score is ever enough; thus, the higher you score, the better it will be.

Having said the above, your approach towards the career goals will be very critical since you are looking at a major domain switch; be sure to address this well; run your thoughts through people and get the opinion of those you trust.

If you take care of the aforesaid, you will have a good chance.

We recommend that you watch the following video to gain a perspective on the essays:

Should you have any follow-up questions, please feel free to reach out to us.

All the best!

Hi,

Can you please evaluate my profile for ISB

Basic bio:

Work experience:
- 6.5 years with Big Australian Bank: I am currently working as a senior manager managing a team of 8 members involved in developing credit risk models using machine learning techniques for the Banks. The models are used for acquisition strategies and for the Capital calculations based on the Basel guidelines.

- Have traveled to Melbourne(Twice for a duration of 2 months) to handle critical projects.

-2 years with a Global Bank headquartered in London.

Have traveled to London(one month Duration) to liaise with Moody's in order to understand the nuances of the product being sold to the Bank. Acted as an Subject Matter expert in dealing with the various stakeholders post the transition.

International experience:

- I have been involved with the CSR groups in both the organizations.

Post-MBA plans:
- I plan on leveraging my risk advisory/ banking experience in moving to the equity general management roles within Banks/NBFCs

Hi abhisekmohanty86

Solid profile there. With a decent app, you should have a very good chance. The only part where we would advise more thought is on the goals bit - you would need to define them more deeply, and establish why an MBA is needed to get there (given your previous work, seems like you can get such a role now). You may also want to address why the need to move back to banking now given some time in analytics at Mu Sigma already.

Hope this helps. Feel free to come back with more queries as needed.

Hi ak21

Thanks for posting. Give the GMAT your best, but given your background (in Biotech) right now, a role in marketing post MBA may be tough. Possibly wait and get some experience in marketing first, and then apply.

I am a master degree holder in Biotechnology from a UK University, followed by co-founding a start up company in hyderabad, in 2010. Since then, I have served my company in the capacity of Head/Director - Operations. The company is a CRO (Clinical Research Organisation), which basically provides various services for Pharmaceutical & Biotech Companies. Now I decided to pursue my long term goal of doing an MBA in ISB. I am currently ready to take my GMAT very shortly. But I am not sure if my entrepreneur profile suits the program and if yes, what is the GMAT score I must target?

Hi Richardlawrence

How much total experience do you have? Also, what is the size/scale of the company you founded?

Hello,

Request to evaluate my Profile

10th Standard:- 86%
12th Standard:- 60%
Btech in Electronics in Instrumentation from WBUT:- CGPA 7.33
MBA from Amity in Telecommunications and Marketing:- 6.5

Stared working in Tata Teleservices as Service Account Manager and was mainly in generating new accounts in Hospitality business (2.5 Years)
Worked in Vodafoen as National Account Manager handling the region Ahmedabad and interacted with C level executives for sale of Vodafone Solutions ( 1 year)
Worked in Snapdeal as Senior Account Manager handling Pan India for sales of the category Electronics and Kitchen Appliances (2 Years)
Currently working in a startup and handling India and Asia pacific for the sale of software specially in Government Projects

Main reason of doing an executive program ( PGPX) is to learn strategic decision making as I feel that in my current role, there are many opportunities where I have the authority to take strategic decisions but due to some limited experience, I am not being able to make the perfect strategic decisions and an executive program might be the right way in which i can address the limitations I am facing right now

I was involved in College Fest in Singing in both college and during MBA Days and had band with whom we performed during mba days
I am also involved in a drama team opened by me and a group of friends and we actively work in short films and live dramas
I am also an avid reader and mainly read ,Fiction and autobiographies

I am planning to appear for GMAT in July and want to apply for IIM PGPX and ISB Hyderabad. I am targeting a score of around 700+.

Two other questions:-
1. Is it better to apply in Round 1 than in Round 2? ( Are there any preferences given)
2. Can I apply for PGPX if I have already done MBA earlier ?

Hi Richardlawrence

ISB has a thriving entrepreneurial community and entrepreneur profiles are always a great fit with their vision and culture. Given your background, you may need to answer questions such as why do you want to do an MBA, if the venture is doing well? Also, if it is only the knowledge you seek and not a career shift, they may feel with your higher work experience (assuming you started in 2010), you may be a better fit for the ISB PGP Pro.

From a GMAT perspective, aim for a 700+ and you should be fine.

Hope this helps. Feel free to reach out to for a detailed discussion.

Hello Richardlawrence,

Thanks for sharing your query.

ISB values entrepreneurial experience immensely; hence, your profile definitely suits ISB; however, a lot depends on how many years of experience you have and what your plans are post the MBA. Please do share the relevant information with us.

With regard to the GMAT score, anything above 710 should give you a very competitive chance.

Good luck!

Hi ankushh87

- You have moved roles a bit, but overall seem ok, as all the roles are consistent with acct mgmt, with the latest role (as you have described) also having a sales component.
- You mention sales for Asia Pac - does this also mean that you travel abroad? Pl clarify on this point.
- Your career goal, at least the way expressed here, will need to be thought through better. You already have an (tier-2) MBA, so cannot claim a lack of understanding of strategy completely. The problem you are facing is understandable, though - having better strategic insight can help you make a better fit with client businesses, and also contribute to more internal initiatives, and so grow beyond sales and acct mgmt.
- On your questions:
1. All other things equal, applying in R1 is better. There are more scholarships available in R1 too. See this article also for some more insight into the issue.
2. Yes, you can apply to the ISB PGP as well as the IIM experienced (GMAT-based) MBA program for a second MBA. No problem there.

Hope this helps. Feel free to come back with more queries as needed.

Hi vineet89

Well, the sheep farming part was interesting! Your work on your farm right now is pretty interesting too. Here is our overall advice:
- You already have 9+ years of experience, but your plank to get in is fairly clear, i.e. move from R&D to the business operations side. You might not really be able to switch industries at this point, but the function you of course can. Do not delay beyond applying this year, as you are already on the higher experience side.
- ECA is quite solid, and your academics are fine too. You will have plenty to offer ISB on the diversity side. Even your failure stories (e.g. sheep farming) will count. ISB values that and is quite open in that way. Your main career stream is of course strong, and has seen you progress well.
- Your chances to get through are good, if you can crack a 700+ GMAT score.

Hope this helps. Feel free to come back with more queries as needed.

Hi
I am Mech Engineer 2015 pass out with low acads (57.36%)
Worked in Micro production company Siddhivinayak Fabricators (June 2015-April 2016)
Worked as Solution Engineer in 3PL Spear Logistics ( May 2016 - May 2017)
Started my own venture in tourism and IOT with IT services - Kluger Kopf (Registed under Ministry of MSME, India) (June 2017 - Present)

GMAT score 710

What are my chances converting ISB

Hi VENKZ

The chances are not bad at all. 710 is a decent score, and IoT is an emerging domain. Yes, the acads are low, and given that we are still in early May, if you can enhance your score over the next couple of months then do that. With a decent application you should have a good shot, as ISB values entrepreneurs.

Hope this helps. Feel free to come back with more queries as needed.

Hello vineet89,

Thanks for your query.

While your work experience is definitely on the higher side, your international experience, as well as, extra-curricular activities will add value to your profile; of course, how well you portray the same through your essays, will be crucial.

While the sheep farming business has closed down, it will still add a lot of diversity to your profile and appeal to the Admissions Committe.

While no GMAT score guarantees an interview call, you should be good with a score around 710! :-)

The following video will help provide you with a perspective on essay writing for ISB:

All the best!

That is excellent. Another clear feather in your cap. Another point we forgot to mention in the last post - software sales are looked at in a somewhat iffy way currently, so be sure to bring out your expertise in the area, and your account management skills.

You may also find some of the articles on ISB and ISB success stories on this link helpful.

Hello!

Could you evaluate my profile as well?

Work experience:

Currently employed with Tata Consultancy Services at Hyderabad, India- since January 2017. I had clear insight that I didn't want to be working on a technically oriented role so I kept my choices narrowed down to managerial roles within my firm.

Used to work as a Project Management Officer (Jan 2017 to Dec 2018) on 1 project- tasks involved were billing, Stakeholder Management, Work Order management, Revenue/Margin enhancement and maintenance of the Revenue Cost registers.

Took up 2 more projects within the next 6 months- notably, one of the projects is one of the biggest projects operating out of Hyderabad.

Since January 2019, have been promoted to a Pricing Analyst- currently part of a global team of 25 Pricing SMEs. I'm the youngest person on boarded onto a team where the average work experience is 9 years (I completed 2 years of work ex on Jan 2019).

A typical day in this role involves working on deal cost models, developing P&L and Cash flow for Contracts, supporting the Bid managers, Sales heads and Solution Heads in developing Contract schedules and determining financial implications of Contract terms.

So by the time I apply for Round 1 this year, I would be having roughly 31 months of work ex.

Academics:

B. Tech in Electronics and Telecommunications from Cochin University of Science and Technology (NBA Accredited Tier 1 College) (July 2016= 77.4%)
12th- CBSE (2012= 87.33%)
10th- ICSE (2010= 84.00%)

Extra curriculars:

Classical music enthusiast, trained in the same (vocal)- both Carnatic and Hindustani styles. Proficient in playing the Keyboard/Harmonium (instruments).

Love debating, public speaking and am a voracious reader. Reasonably confident enough to claim that I have a way with words.

Won a certificate of recognition from the CBSE for outstanding performance in 'English Core'- for being in the top 1% of successful candidates in the country (India).

First GMAT score= 600 (Nov'18). Attempting again by Jul'19- aiming for a 750+.

Do I stand a chance at being a part of the ISB PGPM Class of 2021? Reading some of the profiles here was pretty intimidating- I'm feeling pretty timid. But all the same, I'm excited. Looking forward to a response! :-)

Hi vsnair9

You have a lot of talking points that work well for you. We like that you have consciously built your profile, even in a traditional IT set up. Professionally you're on the right track. Extracurriculars are decent too. Your total work experience would be considered as that completed by 31st March 2020, so it puts you in a good work-experience range.

Our main advice to you would be to get at least 720+ in GMAT. A lesser GMAT would weaken your application. The rest would depend on how you relate your current work-experience to your goals. We can chat in greater detail once your GMAT is out of the way. For now, focus on getting that score.

Feel free to reach out for a discussion.
