Hello alphacentria,

Thanks for your query.

Considering you come from an overrepresented pool of applicants with professional experience on the higher side of the applicant pool, you need to aim for a high GMAT score. Work towards a score upwards of 720; the higher the score, the better it will be; the same will also help offset your average CGPA!

Having said the above, you will also need to put forth a set of stellar essays with goals that flow logically from your existing experience. The following video may help in this regard:

All the best!

Thanks for the reply. I have one year full time pre MBA work exp in IT, which is not included. So overall 10+ yrs. and will be 11+ next year, when I would be 35+.

I would also like to know how well would the program benefit me. Any pointers for the roles and salaries for 10+yrs exp will be helpful.

Hi debayanm

- 11+ years of experience is on the higher side, but IIMC, IIMA, and ISB will still consider it. Lower chance but not zero at IIMB as well.
- The program will certainly benefit you. The move from ops to consulting is feasible, and so are better (more strategic) ops roles post-MBA. There are some exciting opportunities in e-commerce especially for skilled ops professionals nowadays, moving up to program management with more seniority. Salaries are tough to have an exact estimate of, but at your estimate level, and extrapolating with the averages at these schools, an expectation of around 25L may not be unreasonable. The bigger challenge for you will be finding the right role at that level of experience, even with a top MBA.
- As of now, would advise that you focus your energies on the GMAT. There are certainly feasibilities if you do well there.

Hope this helps. Feel free to come back with more queries as needed.

26, male, Indian Sikh.
Business economics graduate from Delhi University 63% (first division). I've derived that my GPA is 3.7 (kindly correct if wrong)
GMAT: 740 (Q51, V39, IR8, AWA6)
Work experience:
Full time 2.5 years, freelance 1.5 years.

I freelanced with a production studio as a cinematographer and a video editor for 6 months. They hired me full-time and promoted me to the post of senior producer because I was good at dealing with clients. This lasted for 6 months too.
Then I left for Mumbai to assist in ads and films to learn more. I was freelancing as well. I was the assistant cinematographer in Kapil Sharma's "Firangi". Was part of many short films as well.

Then I joined my family business of medicine exports. It involved handling purchase and negotiating rates and payment terms. Soon I started travelling to Imphal to manage a pharmacy as it's conflict struck area and hiring someone local was tough.
Additionally, I became a mutual fund distributor in Jan last year. I have a sizeable AUM under me. I am also a stock trader. I still freelance as a cinematographer.

In college I used to make short films on social causes. I'd write, shoot, direct and edit myself. The topics ranged from communal differences, eve teasing to organ donation. I screened the organ donation movie in my college and about 50 viewers pledged their organs after the screening.
I also won numerous awards in -
Street theatre
Best photographer
Best cinematography
Best short film (director)

I wish to get into financial consulting post MBA.

What is the deal breaker here? I've been told that my work ex won't count since I've mostly worked for myself or my family (albeit full time).

Posted from my mobile device

Hi Taranveer

Thanks for posting. Here is our assessment:
- Your GPA may not necessarily be 3.7, except if that figure has been officially given to you by the university. ISB allows you to report in terms of an aggregated average percentage on the application form. That is what you should do.
- Freelance or family business experience per se is not the deal breaker here. The more difficult part is - why did you move from an apparently successful and growing career in cinematography to your family business in medicine exports? So, your path is cinematography --> medicine exports --> MBA --> financial consulting. See the hiccups? These are not insurmountable, but you should be clearly able to identify the issue here.
- Another question you might want to introspect into/answer is - what's the hurry? Why an MBA NOW?
- The GMAT score is quite good and will help.

Hope this helps. Feel free to come back with more queries as needed.

Hi,

I would like someone to evaluate my profile based given the following parameters (note that I am intentionally not divulging specific areas of my profile, given that this is a public post).
1) Grade X and XII: 89% and 73%
2a) University of Mumbai: Bachelors in Management Studies: 86% Grade O - GPA 7.00/7.00
2b) Global association of risk professionals - FRM Part 1 cleared with good scores in January 2019. I am looking to take the part 2 exam in November this year.
3) Work experience:
Sept 2017 - Present: Deloitte LLP, Canada - Senior Consultant
I focus on advising clients (banking and financial services industry) across North America and occasionally the UK in areas of Quality Assurance, financial risk, and regulatory strategy from an AML, fraud and financial crime perspective. I have also led deloitte teams on several projects in the strategy consulting space.
Jan 2016 - Aug 2017: Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India LLP - Consultant - Mumbai, India
Focused on advising clients within the banking and financial services industry in India, middle east and south asia on issues pertaining to regulatory compliance and financial risk.
Jan 2015 - Dec 2015: Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India LLP - Associate - Mumbai, India
I assisted Deloitte teams on engagements pertaining to risk assurance and advisory.
May 2015 - Dec 2014: BNP Paribas India Solutions Pvt Ltd. - Trainee - Mumbai, India
Conducted reviews of export and import documentation against international banking regulation to identify discrepancies in documents and ensure that transactions adhered to local as well as international regulations.

4) Extra-curricular - I have formerly been a mentor at the light house project India - a not for profit that connects university graduates and young professionals in Mumbai with children from under-resourced communities. I was the mentor of a bright 13 year old school student and served as his confidant, building up his self-confidence, courage and public-speaking skills.

I have also completed level B1 of French (DELF - exams) from the Alliance Francaise de Bombay and I have utilized my french speaking skills in my professional career as well as personal life.

5) Professional Goals: enhance my business management skills, continue to work in the domain of regulatory strategy for financial institutions.

What do the admission consultants here think about my profile and where do they spot improvement opportunities? Also, I am taking the GMAT in the latter half of next month.

Hi amegupte0410

Your overall profile is quite solid. The only part to be looked at more closely is your career goal - this role is something you are already in, so why an MBA (that too from ISB, though you have been working with Canadian FS institutions)?

Other than that, of course aim for a decent GMAT score. In your case, with a good app, even a 680+ may work.

You have a good profile for a b-school - the adcom looks at 3 buckets: academics, career and extra-curricular. I can see you are strong in 1, medium in 2 and 3 seems to be missing. I got an admit into ISB and can help you build on your strengths if you want to find some time to chat with me. We also have a comprehensive MBA Application Strategy Guide developed by current students at the top 10 programs (ISB, Booth, Harvard, Stanford, INSEAD and others) to help you develop a successful application. Inside the document you will find how to select your target schools, craft an outstanding MBA resume, and develop your story and essays.

Hello Samrat_92,

Thanks for writing in.

Practically speaking, no score guarantees an interview call or admit.

Of course, your awards suggest that you have been a performer at work; however, to evaluate your profile, we do need some crucial bits of information pertaining to your work experience, leadership experience, extra-curricular activities, career goals, etc.

Please do share the same with us.

All the best!

Hi Team,

I am currently working in the domain of risk and data analytics based process audits for major oil and gas, and e-commerce clients. Broadly looks good, Vaibhav. Internal audit roles provide for a very clear post-MBA career path. The leadership experience you have in your role (assuming leading small teams, but that helps too) will be a further plus. Acads are quite strong, but the CFA part will matter more if it L2. As of now, focus on a 700+ GMAT score.

Hi abhi9Singh

Please also update on your GMAT score.

Overall, the dairy processing company can really help to set you apart from other applicants. Setting this up and making it a success in such a short time is commendable. Other than that, acads are fine, and ECA is ok too. You will need a competitive GMAT score here, but your profile is interesting - if you work right on your app, you should have a decent chance at ISB.

Hello vaibhavarora17,

Thanks for sharing the details.

The leadership role, as well as, the extra-curricular activities, sound good.

A lot will depend on how well you portray all of the above information through your essays and how logically you elucidate your career goals.

The following video will help in this regard:

Regarding the GMAT score, you should target a minimum of 710.

Hello VENKZ,

Thanks for your query.

The low academics is a definite red flag; hence, if you are able to boost your GMAT score, it will help assure the Admissions Committee that you have the ability to adjust to the demands of a rigorous academic program. The 710 is just around the average score at ISB and to help increase your chances, a re-take is recommended.

Regardless of whether you choose to re-take the GMAT or not, how you join the dots in your essays will be very crucial. The entrepreneurial experience will definitely add value to your case.

Please do watch the following video; it will help you approach the essays in a structured manner.
