Not sure how to respond back to this question as this is first time I am answering:
# of snooze: 4. That means Javier will wake up@ 6:16 with readiness = 9. Leaves@ 6:40, means he will take 24 mins to get ready hence no more decrease in his readiness.

Hi

Please refer to the following diagrammatic depiction of the problem:

We can see that he presses the 3rd snooze at 6:08. At 6:12, when he presses the snooze button for the 4th time, his readiness will decrease by 1 unit (from the initial value of 10). When the alarm will buzz again at 6:16, he will get up, get ready in 24 minutes (thereby losing no points) and leave at 6:40.

So, total number of snoozes= 4
His Readiness for work = 10-1 = 9

Hope it helps.

Answer is 9 readiness with 4 snoozes.

Rgds,
Rajat

I got the same results as those in the table. But my confusion lies in multiple options available. Why rule out the pair of 3 & 5 or 5 & 8?

Official Explanation

The following table summarizes the factors relating to Javier’s work-readiness rating based on the number of times the snooze button is pushed.

The table indicates that 9 is the maximum work-readiness rating, which is achieved by pressing the snooze button 4 times.

RO1, Rating:

The correct answer is F, 9.

RO2, Snoozes:

The correct answer is B, 4.

A few key points:

1. We need to select for Rating the greatest work - readiness rating that Java can achieve.
So, I want to maximize this value. Preparing for more than 25 or less than 10 minutes will incur a significant penalty of 5 points. I want to avoid that.

Starting point: Ensure Javier prepares for 10 - 25 minutes.

2. Each snooze delays the alarm by 4 minutes. Also, pressing the snooze button more than three times will also impact the efficiency rating. I want to keep the number of snoozes as close to 3 as possible.

3. During the 40 minutes, Javier's only activities are sleeping or preparing for work. (He doesn't even brush his teeth???)

Combining these points, I'd like to keep Javier's preparation time as close to 25 as I can to minimize the number of snoozes. So, Javier needs to sleep for at least an additional 15 minutes (40 - 25 = 15). That means Javier would need to hit the snooze button 4 times. Pressing the button 3 times would mean that Javier spends 3 x 4 = 12 additional minutes sleeping. That'd mean he prepares for 40 - 12 = 28 minutes. Since these are the only two things he can do in these 40 minutes. So, Javier would need to press the snooze button 4 times for a total of 4 x 4 = 16 minutes so he can prepare for 40 - 16 = 24 minutes.

This way he'd lose 1 point on the rating scale (for the fourth snooze).

Answer:
Rating: 9
Snoozes: 4

Javier rates his work - readiness on a scale from 0 to 10, with 10 being maximum readiness. He wants his rating to be as high as possible when he arrives at his office and has found that the rating is being affected by how late he sleeps and how long he spends preparing for work. His alarm clock sounds at 6am, at which time he has a work - readiness of 10. He needs to leave for work at exactly 6:40am. During these 40mins, Javier's only activities are sleeping or preparing for work.

If Javier spends more than 25 mins or less than 10 mins to prepare, his rating is reduced by 5 points. To sleep past 6am, however, Javier must use the snooze button on his alarm clock, which delays the alarm by 4 mins. Each press of the snooze button after the third will decrease Javier's efficiency rating by 1 point.

In the following table, select for Rating the greatest work - readiness rating that Java can achieve and select for Snoozes the number of times he must press the snooze button to achieve that rating. Make only 2 selections, one in each column.
We can PLUG IN THE ANSWERS, which represent the number of snoozes and the resulting rating.
The number of snoozes is almost certain to be among the three smallest answer choices, while the greatest possible rating is almost certain to be among the three greatest answer choices.

Perfect rating = 10
For every snooze beyond the third, a loss of 1 point is incurred.
Each snooze reduces the 40-minute preparation window by 4 minutes.
If the time left to prepare is less than 10 minutes or more than 25 minutes, a loss of 5 points is incurred.

Onto the answer choices:

Snoozes = 3 --> 3*4 = 12 extra minutes of sleep --> remaining preparation time = 40-12 = 28 minutes
Point loss because of snoozes beyond the third = 0
Point loss due to preparation time = 5
Resulting rating = 10-0-5 = 5

Snoozes = 4 --> 4*4 = 16 extra minutes of sleep --> remaining preparation time = 40-16 = 24 minutes
Point loss because of snoozes beyond the third = 1
Point loss due to preparation time = 0
Resulting rating = 10-1-0 = 9

9 is the greatest value among the answer choices.
Thus, the greatest possible rating = 9, resulting from 4 snoozes.

Total score 10
Time to be accounted for = 40 mins

After 3 snoozes of total 12 mins, every 4 min snooze reduces the score by 1 point so we need to minimize snoozes after 3.
3 snoozes account for 3*4 = 12 mins

To prepare Javier must use between 10 to 25 mins only else the score drops by 5 points.
At most Javier can prepare for 25 mins

This accounts for total 12 + 25 = 37 mins. We still need to account for another 3 mins. So we make him snooze once more and his readiness reduces by 1 point.

So he snoozes a total of 4 times and his readiness is 10 - 1 = 9

Select Rating = 9 and Snoozes = 4
