Dear Members,Thank you very much for a huge response to the recent chat session with Cornell Admission team. members -
Mr. Eddie Asbie and
Ms. Jade Kinsman.
For our friends who could not attend the event, below are some key Questions and Answers. If you want to read the entire discussion, download the session transcript attached to this post.
Dtse86: Can you elaborate on the rules for waitlisted applicants?
Eddie: Being on the waitlist is not a bad thing. We want you to take some time to re-evaluate your application and think of ways to strengthen it. It could be your test scores, re-evaluating goals, etc.
alwayswaiting: Does attending Cornell for undergrad have any impact on how you evaluate applications?
Eddie: If you're a Cornell undergrad it's something we take into consideration but we still look at your application like every other candidate
Bab_2014: Could you elaborate on whether the 1 yr TechMBA is specifically for those who wish to get into the Tech industry? Also how this program compares to the other 1 yr Full Time MBA program for experienced professionals?
Eddie: AS for Cornell Tech, this program is right for you if you truly grasp the digital economy and have solid experience and proven success within tech companies or in tech initiatives in traditional companies.
Bab_2014: So the Tech MBA is specifically for those interested in pursuing/ continuing in the Tech industry... Also, will the TechMBA degree be marked as a 'Tech MBA' or a general MBA - same as the other Cornell full time MBA programs?
Eddie: To learn about the difference between the 1 year and Cornell Tech MBA, please review our website:
https://www.johnson.cornell.edu/Cornell-Tech-MBA and
https://www.johnson.cornell.edu/One-Year-MBAKayb: What is the max amount of scholarship that one can expect to receive?
Jade: The max amount of scholarship is our Park Fellowship which is a full tuition scholarship that eligible applicants can apply for. Our other scholarship amounts vary typically from about $2500 and up.
dtse86: I'm interested in the "Consulting Passport" program. There doesn't seem to be much information regarding what is involved and how much is student driven vs. CMC driven. Can you elaborate further?
Eddie: Here is some further information regarding the Consulting Club, who is very involved with the Consulting Passport:
https://johnson.campusgroups.com/consult/about/rajanisingh18: I have been waitlisted in R1 without interview. Apart from sending revised test scores, Could you please advise how can one increase ones chances of getting an interview?
Jade: For waitlisted applicants we also encourage you to notify us of any job updates or promotions, as well as any classes you may be taking to strengthen your quantitative skills.
Eddie: I would encourage you to re-evaluate your goals. Connect with the Johnson community to continue to learn more. Consider retaking the GMAT/GRE again, if you need to. Also, i'm always willing to have 1-on-1 conversations to elaborate further on the waitlist process
Mr_Orange: What is the projected class size?
Eddie: Projected calls size is approximately 280 for the 2 year MBA class.
Bigred2008: Can you explain some of what happens within the immersion period? I have an interest in the operations immersion, and I wanted to know is it something that runs alongside normal classes, and what does it entail?
BryanWong: To expand on Bigred2008's question regarding the immersion learning, is it a sort of field-trip experience to visit 11-15 sites and are all sites visited in the USA?
Eddie: Hi BryanWong and Bigred2008: The immersion learning program is more than just visits to companies. You are taking advance level classes one area, working on real projects, and getting feedback and advice from experts.
pratikgupta: I have been waitlisted in R1 and I was wondering what would be the ideal word limit for sending an update?
Eddie: My personal recommendation for updates is to keep it to a page. Also for the 1 year program, there is not an internship but a two-week practicum in the beginning of the spring semester.
Bab_2014: i) Are there internship opportunities in both the 1-yr MBA programs? and (ii) the certification courses (like PMP, etc...) are not pre-requisite for applying for the 1yr Ithaca MBA, correct?
Eddie: If you're applying to the 1 year program, you must have an advance degree or certain certifications. Please see from our site,
https://www.johnson.cornell.edu/One-Year-MBArajanisingh18: Besides the Coursera Quant courses is it advisable to take say Economics/Finance courses online, if I am interested in a post-MBA career in Finance to further strengthen my application?
Eddie: My recommendation is to take course that prove and show your quantitative ability but the finance/econ courses sound great
Bab_2014: The site lists US Masters degrees. Would a Full Time Masters Degree from India be considered?
Eddie: Yes a Masters from India would be considered. If we have any questions regarding the degree, we will notify you.
MB101: "Advanced degrees eligible for credit include, but are not limited to: MS" - would it compare to an M.Sc / MCA from Asia, say?
Eddie: Yes that is correct. If you have an specific school in mind and want me to look at your transcript, please email me directly at
ea356@cornell.eduShanBhaskar: What are some ways to show the AdCom that one with less than average work experience still have sufficient qualitative work experience and therefore ready for Bschool?
Eddie: I would encourage to have someone write another letter endorsing you on your experience. Give us updates on projects you have worked on or accomplishments.
dtse86: When scheduling an interview, can we also schedule a class visit and a meeting with a current student at the same time? If so, what would be the best way to go about it?
Jade: Hi dtse86, you can certainly register for a class visit and information session while on campus for your interview and we encourage you to do so. There is also a link to search for current students that you can reach out to and schedule a meeting, and we also offer Admissions office hours.
pratikgupta: How can I connect with Johnson Alums residing in India to develop more clarity on my goals?
Jade: Pratikgupta, here is the link to search for alums
https://www.johnson.cornell.edu/Full-Time-MBA/Admissions/Johnson-Ambassador-Search This can also be used to search for current students. Also, here is the link to plan your visit to Ithaca
https://www.johnson.cornell.edu/Full-Time-MBA/Plan-a-Visit The registration links for class visits, info session, office hours, etc is there.
rajanisingh18: Is it possible to get a personal feedback from Johnson for waitlisted candidates?
Jade: We are currently focused on scheduling and conducting interviews for the round 1 applicants so we do not typically give individual waitlist feedback as the demand is very high. Nichole Grossman
nmg54@cornell.edu manages our waitlist and you can reach out to her if you'd like if you have any questions or updates to send us.
dtse86: Will R1 decision notifications go out on the date specified or will some be released prior to that date?
Jade: December 17 is our decision notification date, so that is when everyone will receive their final decision we do not release them earlier.
Ninodecoro: Is there any mandatory form that the candidates put in waiting list have to fill up?
Jade: This year we do not have a waitlist reply form, if you choose not to stay on the waitlist please just notify admissions by email. Otherwise, those on the waitlist we assume are still interested in Johnson and will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Since we do review waitlisted candidates on a rolling basis it's good to send in your updates sooner rather than later, and it also lets us know that you are still interested and actively trying to improve your candidacy.
carrtb: Are you able to provide any insight into the interviews? Has the interviewer seen the complete application and how does the team choose (other than availability) who the interviewer will be?
Eddie: The interviewer has not seen your complete application. They do have your resume though. Choosing an interview sometime is based on availability and who we feel would be the best person to interview you based on your background and interest.
