Q1. In order to control the deer population, a biologist has proposed injecting female deer during breeding season with 10 milligrams of a hormone that would suppress fertility. Critics have charged that the proposal poses health risks to people who might eat the meat of treated deer and thereby ingest unsafe quantities of the hormone. The biologist has responded to these critics by pointing out that humans can ingest up to 10 milligrams of the hormone a day without any adverse effects, and since no one would eat even one entire deer a day, the treatment would be safe. The biologist’s response to critics of the proposal is based on which one of the following assumptions? (A) People would be notified of the time when deer in their area were to be treated with the hormone. (B) The hormone that would be injected into the deer is chemically similar to hormones used in human contraceptives. (C) Hunting season for deer could be scheduled so that it would not coincide with breeding season. (D) The hormone in question does not occur naturally in the female deer that would be injected. (E) Most people do not consider deer meat to be part of their daily diet and eat it only on rare occasions.

Q2. In 2005, more citizens from the country of Monrovia migrated from Monrovia to neighboring Abstania than during any prior year. In 2005, the number of reported violent crimes in Abstania increased dramatically over 2004. The unavoidable conclusion is that Monrovians who migrated from Monrovia to Abstania were responsible for this increase. Which of the following statements, if true, would most seriously weaken the claim that Monrovians were responsible for the increase in violent crime in Abstania during 2005? (A) Each year more violent criminals are apprehended in Abstania than in Monrovia. (B) During 2005, more violent crimes were reported in Abstania than in Monrovia. (C) In 2005, no Monrovians migrated from either Monrovia or Abstania to any country other than Monrovia or Abstania. (D) In 2005, the number of unreported violent crimes in Abstania increased as well. (E) In 2005, fewer Monrovians migrated from Monrovia to Abstania than from Abstania to Monrovia.

CR Questions March - 3 :

Q1. To combat human error involved in air traffic control, Miro Jets Inc. has recently installed each of its DC-10 passenger planes with a special anti-collision device. The device alerts the DC-10, via a red light, when another plane is slightly more than three minutes away from a potential collision. Aviation experts at Miro Jet Inc. have determined that three minutes is ample time for a plane to divert its respective flight paths to avoid a collision. Therefore, if the red light on the anti-collision device is off, the DC-10 is more than three minutes flying time from any plane.

Which of the following, if true, most fundamentally calls into question the aviation analyst’s argument?

(A) Recently, a near collision in which both planes were less than 90 seconds flying distance from each other was averted only by the prompt actions of air traffic controllers.

(B) Some aviation experts warn that in certain cases three minutes may not provide sufficient time for aircrafts to maneuver without causing onboard injuries.

(C) The anti-collision device only signals planes of oncoming directions, not those planes that are flying in parallel.

(D) When two DC-10’s approach each other the red lights on each aircraft do not necessarily turn on simultaneously.

(E) The DC-10 is not the only aircraft model to have been installed with the anti-collision device.

Please explain why the OA directly weakens the conclusion.

Q2. Proponents of the theory of social utilitarianism hold that the value of human capital should bear an inherent relation to its social utility. Although maximizing the value of human capital is both morally defensible and economically praiseworthy, the theory of social utilitarianism has severe practical limitations. If the price of labor were to become a measure of social utility and not of scarcity, the labor market would suffer significant distortions that may well reduce, and not increase, the current level of human capital.

The argument proceeds by

(A) Questioning a proposed strategy by showing that, if implemented, such a strategy could compromise the very objectives it is trying to achieve.

(B) Criticizing a course of action by showing that, even if morally defensible, the end result does not always justify the means necessary to achieve it.

(C) Criticizing a strategy by suggesting that there is an alternative way of achieving its proposed advantages without risking a number of serious disadvantages.

(D) Conceding that a social policy may have certain ethical advantages that are ultimately outweighed by the impossibility of putting such a policy into effect.

(E) Establishing that undesirable consequences result from the adoption of a social policy whose goal is antithetical to the central tenets of a free market economy.

Q1. Scientists have discovered a gene that controls whether an individual is monogamous. They took a gene from the monogamous prairie vole and implanted it into its more promiscuous relative, the meadow vole. Thereafter, the meadow voles with the new gene became monogamous.

Which one of the following, if true, would provide the most support for the argument’s conclusion?

(A) Studies on humans and other mammals have shown that receptors for the hormone vasopressin play a role in autism, drug addiction, and the formation of romantic attachments.

(B) Prairie voles typically form lifelong partnerships, which scientists have linked to an increased number of receptors for the hormone vasopressin.

(C) Meadow voles live in a harsher environment than prairie voles and cannot afford to pass up opportunities to mate as often as possible.

(D) The scientists used a harmless virus to capture the gene and transfer it into the meadow voles.

(E) The meadow voles that had the prairie vole gene implanted in them were released into and observed in the same habitat in which they had previously lived.

Q2. In a certain wildlife park, park rangers are able to track the movements of many rhinoceroses because those animals wear radio collars. When, as often happens, a collar slips off, it is put back on. Putting a collar on a rhinoceros involves immobilizing the animal by shooting it with a tranquilizer dart. Female rhinoceroses that have been frequently recollared have significantly lower fertility rates than uncollared females. Probably, therefore, some substance in the tranquilizer inhibits fertility.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

(A) The dose of tranquilizer delivered by a tranquilizer dart is large enough to give the rangers putting collars on rhinoceroses a generous margin of safety.

(B) The fertility rate of uncollared female rhinoceroses in the park has been increasing in the past few decades.

(C) Any stress that female rhinoceroses may suffer as a result of being immobilized and handled has little or no negative effect on their fertility.

(D) The male rhinoceroses in the wildlife park do net lose their collars as often as the park’s female rhinoceroses do.

(E) The tranquilizer used in immobilizing rhinoceroses is the same as the tranquilizer used in working with other large mammals.

Q1. Brothers Inc, a construction company, spends significant time and money to dismantle older houses piece by piece in order to reuse the wood. Although the company does earn a net profit despite these expenditures, the company could earn even more by adopting a new policy. Brothers’ new land contains hundreds of trees that are already slated to be razed; the company should use those trees for wood instead of the old houses

Which of the following, if true, most strongly supports Brothers’ policy to reuse wood?

(A) It is a waste of resources for a company that needs wood to chop down hundreds of trees but not use the wood.
(B) There is virtually no difference in quality between wood reclaimed from older houses and wood processed from newly-chopped trees.
(C) Sawmills can reshape previously used wood much more quickly and cost-effectively than it can shape whole trees.
(D) It would cost the company less to use the trees it already owns than to pay to dismantle homes for previously used wood.
(E) The number of older houses available for dismantling is growing steadily

Q2. The chanterelle, a type of wild mushroom, grows beneath host trees such as the Douglas fir, which provide it with necessary sugars. The underground filaments of chanterelles, which extract the sugars, in turn provide nutrients and water for their hosts. Because of this mutually beneficial relationship, harvesting the chanterelles growing beneath a Douglas fir seriously endangers the tree.

Which of the following, if true, casts the most doubt on the conclusion drawn above?

(A) The number of wild mushrooms harvested has increased in recent years.

(B) Chanterelles grow not only beneath Douglas firs but also beneath other host trees.

(C) Many types of wild mushrooms are found only in forests and cannot easily be grown elsewhere.

(D) The harvesting of wild mushrooms stimulates future growth of those mushrooms.

(E) Young Douglas fir seedlings die without the nutrients and water provided by chanterelle filaments.

The answer should be C ..We have to Strengthen the conclusion of company’s decision by stating that it is more efficient to reuse wood than to cut trees .Option A,B,E are irrelevant as it shows no relation between the 2 cases on effectiveness of using use old vs new wood. option d is opposite

This Question is Easy if one knows the meaning of Harvesting .i.e. is cutting the trees. So the question gave a relationship that both wild mushroom and a tree are mutually beneficial .So dont cut them.and we have to weaken it that is to state that removing mushroom actually helps.one way to think of it is that cutting the mushroom plant has other benifits to the Host tree, like wild mushroom attracts bacteria ,or to state what option D has said that is if we remove mushroom then it attracts even more mushrooms to grow .since the question has given a positive relationship between mushroom and host tree so it is easily inferable.

Correct Answer option B. Reason : A marriage involves two people so we need each other and not one another. referring to marriage in general results in confusion who the one another are .i.e. husband and wife . So instead of generalizing better to use a marriage .Option E has Subject verb error. a marriage and "are"

So the question gave a relationship that both wild mushroom and a tree are mutually beneficial .So dont cut them.and we have to weaken it that is to state that removing mushroom actually helps.one way to think of it is that cutting the mushroom plant has other benifits to the Host tree, like wild mushroom attracts bacteria ,or to state what option D has said that is if we remove mushroom then it attracts even more mushrooms to grow .since the question has given a positive relationship between mushroom and host tree so it is easily inferable.
good catch. it is easy to find correct answer if he /she knows the meaning of harvesting

Q1. Brothers Inc, a construction company, spends significant time and money to dismantle older houses piece by piece in order to reuse the wood. Although the company does earn a net profit despite these expenditures, the company could earn even more by adopting a new policy. Brothers’ new land contains hundreds of trees that are already slated to be razed; the company should use those trees for wood instead of the old houses Which of the following, if true, most strongly supports Brothers’ policy to reuse wood?

CR Questions March - 6 :

Q1. Pharmaceutical manufacturers have long claimed that one of the main reasons they give doctors free drug samples is so that doctors can pass the medicine along to poor patients. However, a new study shows that high-income, well-insured individuals receive considerably more prescription drug samples than do low-income, poorly insured individuals. This is because doctors favor affluent people with health insurance.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously jeopardizes the validity of the explanation for why high-income individuals receive more free prescription drug samples than low-income individuals do?

(A) Independent medical clinics not affiliated with large hospitals receive only a small percentage of the free drug samples distributed by pharmaceutical manufacturers.

(B) Because of the associated costs, low-income people see doctors less often, if at all.

(C) Some medical offices refuse to treat individuals for conditions that are not critical or life-threatening if the individual does not have the means to pay for the treatment.

(D) Once the free drug sample supply in a doctor’s office is gone, the patients are forced to pay for their prescriptions.

(E) Though they claim to give doctors free drug samples in order to help poor patients, the real reasons pharmaceutical companies do it are to increase brand awareness and to influence the doctor to prescribe these drugs more often.

Q2. Studies show that families in which both the husband and the wife are working normally tend to be single-child families. It is commonly understood that such partners prefer to have only one child because of the lack of time on their hands to raise more than one child. However, other studies have shown that in households that have both the husband and wife working but that have more than one child, the partners married each other in their early twenties. Since majority of the working parents in single-child households marry post the age of thirty-five, it is clear that the real reason such families have only one child is the age of the parents that does not biologically allow them to have more than one child.

In the argument given, the two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?

Correct Answer option B. Reason : A marriage involves two people so we need each other and not one another. referring to marriage in general results in confusion who the one another are .i.e. husband and wife . So instead of generalizing better to use a marriage .Option E has Subject verb error. a marriage and "are"
great catch  :)

CR Questions March - 7 :

Q1. Market research traditionally entails surveying consumers about why they buy and use particular products and brands. Observational research-actually watching consumers shopping and interacting with products-is now increasingly used by market researchers to supplement survey. Market researchers claim that observational research yields information about consumer behavior that surveys cannot provide.

Which one of the following, if true, provides the strongest support for the market researchers’ claim?

(A) Even consumers who are unable to explain their preference for or rejection of particular brands reveal which brands they are considering by picking up and putting down products while they are shopping.
(B) Market researchers find that consumers are almost always willing to participate in observational research for which the consumer is paid by the hour.
(C) Consumers are becoming increasingly self-conscious about their buying habits, and some consumers have stopped buying some items that they normally used to buy.
(D) Market researchers say they find data collection more enjoyable in observational research than in survey research, because observational research requires more creative judgment on their part.
(E) Consumers are more likely to respond to oral surveys than they are to respond to written questionnaires.

Q2. In humans, the pilomotor reflex leads to the response commonly known as goose bumps, and this response is widely considered to be vestigial—that is, something formerly having a greater physiological advantage than at present. It occurs when the tiny muscle at the base of a hair follicle contracts, pulling the hair upright. In animals with feathers, fur, or quills, this creates a layer of insulating warm air or a reason for predators to think twice before attacking. But human hair is too puny to serve these functions. Goose bumps in humans may, however, have acquired a new role. Like flushing—another thermoregulatory (heat-regulating) mechanism—goose bumps have become linked with emotional responses, notably fear, rage, or the pleasure of, say, listening to beautiful music. They may thus serve as a signal to others.

In explaining the “new role” (line 7) that goose bumps in humans may have acquired, the author assumes which of the following?

A Emotional responses in humans can be triggered by thermoregulatory mechanisms.

B The perceptibility of emotional responses to other humans offers some kind of benefit.

C If human hair were more substantial, goose bumps would not have acquired a new role.

D Goose bumps in animals with feathers, fur, or quills may also be linked to emotional responses.

E In humans, goose bumps represent an older physiological response than flushing.
