Q2. In a recent survey, the Gallup poll discovered that the average American speaks 1.3 languages, buys a new car every 5.2 years, drinks 14 gallons of alcoholic beverages every year, and forgot to pay at least one bill per quarter. A. drinks 14 gallons of alcoholic beverages every year, and forgot to pay at least one bill per quarter B. drinks 14 gallons of alcoholic beverages every year, and forgets to pay at least one bill per quarter C. can drink 14 gallons of alcoholic beverages every quarter and forgot to pay at least one bill per quarter D. drinks 14 gallons of alcoholic beverages every year, and forgets at least to pay one bill per quarter E. drank 14 gallons of alcoholic beverages every year, and forgets to pay at least one bill per quarter
Answer Choice B . This is a good question involving parallelism. The average American does 4 things all in present.1) speaks,2)buys,3)drinks4) forgets. Choice A has "Forgot" instead of Forgets. Choice C has "Can and Forgot" instead of Verbs Drinks and forgets. Can is wrong because it also leads to a hypothesis instead of certainty. Choice E again has " Drank".Choice D is interesting .it has a modifier error." At least "should not be placed after forgets, as it results in a meaning error. (meaning is what the 1st sentence conveys or intends to convey)

The answer choice C is Correct, as all choices have major Subject verb errors. Choice a has a tense error " focussed past tense" while we need present tense Also SV error as we have Release. We need "Releases "with Practicing Yoga pose poses .please note Verbing is always singular when it is subject..Same Sv with B .Choice D makes the result and the cause sound as if though they are a part of list. kindly note Verbing is used for Cause effect relationship, "and " is used for listing of similar elements. Choice E has" , that" that makes it parallel to the first "that practising yoga".its incorrect . as we need "that" to refer to Yoga poses.
great explanation

Correct answer E: .Reason " it" can refer to law/evidence after the Comma it is not clear. Choices A through C have it, Choices D and E have evidence , which is much more correct in the context. Understand a law cannot be a desperate ploy on part of prosecution ,evidence can be. Choice D has " if" conditional statement ...whereas choice e has when a fact stating statement. Conditional possibility is a slight change in meaning .We are not trying to say that if suppose you use the law ,then the interpretation is XYZ .we are making a fact statement that when you use the law ,XYZ is going to happen.so my preference will be towards E .

this one looks like answer D: Reason: list of 3 things is given. aimed at 1)Emotional intelligence 2)Practicing active listening3) Learning .Option A does not fit the parallellism test.Option B introduces "They" for no reason again parellism error .Option C and E have at in the list before two elements and not after third. While e-reading is more convenient by far, it has drawbacks: you can have books purloined by publishers and vendors over legal squabbles, the battery can die, and you need to turn your e-reader off for airplane takeoffs and landings. Therefore, online stores and e-books do not pose a threat to independent bookstores or larger chains. The argument above assumes the validity of which of the following premises? (A) No larger book store chain will go out of business in the foreseeable future (B) Independent bookstores should become better positioned to compete with larger chains and online stores (C) A representative consumer factors in the tactile sensation of a book in the decision process to purchase that book (D) Online stores and e-books will continue to grow in popularity (E) The subject matter of a book is the deciding factor in the decision to own that book

B. MRI’s were designed primarily in order to diagnose blockages in the coronary arteries
C. Angiograms reveal more information about the nature of blockage than a MRI can
D. An MRI is just as likely as an angiogram to identify an arterial blockage

An MRI is just as likely as an angiogram to identify an arterial blockage E. Some patients for whom an angiogram presents no risk are unwilling to undergo an MRI
This one looks like D . Reason: our conclusion statement says that we must replace angiograms in all attempts at diagnosing coronary blockages . What if angiograms have some other uses that MRI cannot identify, for example, the degree of blockage can be identified in angiogram more than MRI so in this case we cannot replace angiogram. Statement D does exactly that . An MRI is just as likely as an angiogram to identify an arterial blockage. Close option is B MRI’s were designed primarily in order to diagnose blockages in the coronary arteries. But the purpose of the design of MRI is irrelevant as long as it can serve our purpose.

Correct answer B: 1st is a fact a general observation. 2nd statement is the author’s conclusion,it may or may not be correct as In the premise it is not mentioned to what extent we need to lay off to survive the crisis. whereas in authors conclusion, we are taking it as 10%

The correct answer should be E. Reason No need for contrast A, and B are out as it leads to meaning error. Choices C, and D have a major error in sentence construction. It should not be those featured in articles in business and politics. it is articles on individuals in business and politics.Choice d has pronoun ambiguity .They refers to who? magazines or persons from entertainment industry

Q2. Language experts conducted an experiment to judge the effect of reading books on the writing abilities of children. In the first phase of the experiment, children from a private school were asked to read excerpts from three classic books before they were asked to write an essay on their mother. It was found that 39% of these children were able to present a good opening and closing, and use good vocabulary. In the second phase of the experiment, children in the same age group from a public school were asked to read excerpts from three contemporary books. Now, only 18% of the children were able to present a good opening and closing, and use good vocabulary. The experts concluded that children are more likely to get influenced by reading books when they read classics than when they read contemporary work.

Which one of the following, if true, would most seriously weaken the experts’ conclusion?

a. Children studying in private schools generally have similar command over reading and writing English as those studying in public schools have.

b. In the second phase, the children were the toppers of their school.

c. The first group consisted of children with Math as their favorite subject while the second group consisted of children with English as their favorite subject.

d. In the second phase, 37% of the children were found skipping a large part of their reading material. This percentage was 65% in the first phase.

e. The percentage of children known to have a flair for reading and writing English was higher in the first phase than in the second phase.

CR Questions March - 11 :

Q1. New home buyers are all financially protected against bankruptcy of the contractor because of a law requiring the contractor to get bank backing to insure all individual investments. An economist argues that this insurance is partly responsible for the high rate of bankruptcies among contractors, since it removes from buyers any financial incentive to find out the financial status of the contractor they are hiring. If buyers were more selective, then contractors would need to be secure in order to compete for buyers.

The economist’s argument makes which of the following assumptions?

A. Bankruptcy is caused when contractors default on loan repayments to their banks.
B. A significant proportion of contractors use the services of sub-contractors to do the bulk of the work.
C. The more a homebuyer has to invest in a house he or she is building, the more careful he or she tends to be in selecting a contractor.
D. The difference in the payment schedules to contractors is not a significant factor in bankruptcies.
E. People looking for a contractor to build their houses are able to determine which contractors are secure against bankruptcy.

Q2. Sportfishers introduced the Zander, a type of perch, to Britain’s rivers and canals in the 1970s. Because zander eat large numbers of smaller fish, they have had a devastating effect on native fish populations. To protect the native fish, a government program removed a significant proportion of the zander from Britain’s waterways last year. Surprisingly, this year the loss of native fish to zander has been greater than before.

Which of the following, if true, would most help to explain the greater effect of zander on the native fish population?

A. The climate in Britain is very similar to the climate in regions to which zander are native.
B. Most of the zander removed were fully grown, and fully grown zander eat large numbers of smaller zander.
C. Every year a large number of zander are caught by sportfisher in Britain’s waterway.
D. Previous government program designed to remove nonnative species from Britain’s waterways have failed.
E. Zander are just one of several nonnative fish that prey on the other fish found in Britain’s waterway.

Q1. In linguistics, the term ‘phatic communication’ refers to words and phrases that have been used so frequently that they no longer contain any inherent meaning. Analysts of emerging industries, which may be defined as products or ideas in early stages of development that are often based around a new technology, expect that current terminologies used in such industries to refer to work processes will eventually fall into the category of phatic expressions, because ___________________________________________________________________

Which of the following best completes the passage above?

a. inherent meaning is determined primarily on the basis of the frequency with which a term is used.
b. the terms are newly-coined and can be expected to be in use for a considerable period of time.
c. not only are such terms used excessively, but many of them are so new that users are unsure of their exact definitions.
d. terminology used in one field is usually not applicable in other unrelated fields.
e. emerging industry types can be analyzed in terms of existing terms from linguistics.

Q2. In this era of ever increasing oil prices, fuel-efficiency is the primary concern of most car buyers. Because of the increasing demand for fuel-efficient cars, many companies have entered this segment, leading to fierce competition. Recently, both Toyota and General Motors launched their latest cars in this segment on the same day. Even though the car from General Motors fared much better on fuel efficiency, its market share has remained low compared to that of the car from Toyota.

Which of the following best explains the paradox presented above?

(A) Except higher fuel efficiency, the car from General Motors does not offer any other advantage over the car from Toyota.

(B) On the same day when Toyota and General Motors launched their cars, a couple of other companies also launched their cars and, while one of them sold well, the other did not.

(C) With ever increasing range of products to choose from, consumers now rely much more on the brand name of a company than the promised features and, unlike General Motors, Toyota has been a known name in fuel efficient car industry.

(D) Since the total market for fuel-efficient cars has expanded a lot in the past, even companies with low market shares have made profits.

(E) Even though General Motors can service all the existing demand, its production capacity is much lower than the production capacity of Toyota.
