Q1. Although critics of various beauty contests argue that such contests objectify women by judging them mostly on their physical appearance and not as much on other qualities they may possess, such contests are little different from any other competition; for instance, in various sports contests participants are judged mostly on their physical prowess than anything else. Which of the following can be concluded from the argument given above? A. Competitions by nature lay stress on honing one particular quality of contestants. B. While evaluating the contestants, every competition values certain criteria more than the other criteria. C. Both beauty contests and sports competitions are unfair because they value very limited qualities in contestants. D. CR Questions February - 23 :

Q1. Film critic: As film studies show, the mythological films made these days focus excessively on superficial aspects such as dramatic sets visually enhanced by computer graphics. Since such aids were not used twenty years back when film directors did not indulge in any such gimmickry and concentrated solely on narrating the story through bare minimum props, it shows that the current directors seem to think that they can fool people by packaging their low-content films with visually fantastic elements.

Which of the following will be most useful in evaluating the claim made by the critic above?

A. Is there any difference between the demographics of the audience twenty years back and now?

B. Has the amount of money invested in film-production changed over the past twenty years?

C. Does international audience now form a significantly higher proportion of the audience for mythological films than it did twenty years back?

D. When compared to film directors twenty years back, do the current breed of directors have a wider access to international sci-fi films that contain heavy use of computer graphics?

E. Did film directors twenty years back have comparable access to computer graphics as do the current breed of film directors?

Q2. A six-month public health campaign sought to limit the spread of influenza by encouraging people to take precautions such as washing their hands frequently and avoiding public places when they experience influenza symptoms. Since the incidence of influenza was much lower during those months than experts had predicted, the public evidently heeded the campaign.

Which one of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument?

(A) The incidence of food-borne illnesses, which can be effectively controlled by frequent hand washing, was markedly lower than usual during the six-month period.

(B) During the six-month period, the incidence of the common cold, which has many of the same symptoms as influenza, was about the same as usual.

(C) There were fewer large public gatherings than usual during the six-month period.

(D) Independently of the public health campaign, the news media spread the message that one’s risk of contracting influenza can be lessened by frequent hand washing.

(E) In a survey completed before the campaign began, many people admitted that they should do more to limit the spread of influenza.

CR Questions February - 24 :

Q1. Clearly, while comparing two companies, higher sales do not necessarily indicate higher profits. A recently published article in a prominent business magazine shows that the top ten names on the list of companies with the highest sales and the corresponding names on the list of companies with the highest profits are mutually exclusive.

Which of the following can properly be inferred based on the above statements?

(A) While comparing two companies, the company with higher sales is more likely to have lower profits.
(B) It is highly likely that two companies with different sales have the same profit margin.
(C) Sales and profits have no correlation.
(D) While comparing two companies, lower sales do not by themselves indicate lower profits.
(E) In order to compete in the market, it is better for a company to have higher profits than higher sales.

Q2. Two different concepts, copyright infringement and plagiarism, are often confused for each other. Copyright infringement deals with the unauthorized use of copyright material and hence the violation of the rights of the copyright holder. Plagiarism, on the other hand, is concerned with false claims of authorship of ideas, works etc. that may not necessarily be protected under copyright. Moreover, even if a person gets the permission to use copyright material, it may still account for plagiarism if the person tries to falsely claim the authorship of the material.

Which of the following must be true on the basis of the information given in the above argument?

A. Plagiarism may not always amount to copyright infringement but copyright infringement always amounts to plagiarism.

B. Any unauthorized use of material that has been protected under copyright will be considered plagiarism.

C. Under certain conditions, use of copyright free material can still be considered plagiarism.

D. Even authorized use of copyright material amounts to plagiarism.

E. In a court of law, it is easier to prove a case of copyright infringement than a case of plagiarism.

really good question. I can’t figure out between A and B. :( "Initially" should be as close to "longer timeframe" as possible but on the other hand, the adverb "Initially" modifies "given". :(

Not sure if it is an official question - the GMAT will not usually have such tight answer choices. Here is how I view it:
Initially behaves a modifier. B places the initially just before "had been". This would suggest, at least to me, that some other time frame was given at first. This is consistent with what the passage suggests - there were two time frames, one given initially and one that actually occurred.
A places it just before "given". Initially given, at least to me, suggests not that there were two time frames, but that it was "initially given" by the architect, and then given by someone else. Not quite the meaning that the passage is trying to convey.

Super tricky question, and I don’t think it’s representative of actual GMAT but a brainteaser for sure!

Q1. There are a group of kids in our neighborhood who like to get together on the weekends and help less fortunate children. A. The are a group of kids in our neighborhood who like to get together on the weekends and help less fortunate children B. Getting together on the weekends are a group of kids which like helping less fortunate children C. A group of kids on the weekend getting together in our neighborhood like the helping of less fortunate children D. There is a group of kids in our neighborhood who like to get together on the weekends and help less fortunate children E. In our neighborhood, there is a group of kids who likes to get together on the weekends and helping less fortunate children.
Should be D.
The "who like" modifies "kids", rather than "group.
E is nearly correct (who likes is correct, modifying "a group") however it falls apart in parallelism - "and helping" has nothing to be parallel to.
A can be easily eliminated for SJV error, B for the same reasons as A, and C is not a sentence.

Well. the timeframe is conveyed by "had been". Even if we were to remove "initially" completely, even then the meaning wouldn’t change at all. For eg, "The entire project took over three years to complete, a much longer time frame than the one that had been given by the building’s architect."
The meaning didn’t change? right? :)
So that’s why I thought that since initially modifies given, we should prioritize adverb modifier’s closeness rather than the comparison’s closeness. :P But ofcourse, I could be wrong. :)
What do you think? What are your opinions on this? :)
