Q1. Sales of yoga mats from Daniel’s yoga studio this year were double those of the prior year. However, average enrollment per class at Daniel’s studio decreased from the prior year, despite Daniel’s studio being the only yoga studio in town. Which of the following, if true, most helps to explain the discrepancy in sales? (A) Daniel offered a greater variety of yoga mats for sale than he had offered the previous year. (B) The prices of yoga mats in Daniel’s studio increased from the previous year. (C) Daniel began to teach additional styles of yoga this year, increasing the number of classes offered and attracting new students. (D)Daniel increased the cost of each of his yoga classes from the previous year. (E) Daniel’s studio requires that an individual bring his or her own yoga mat to each of the classes. Q2. The public service advertising campaign promoting the use of helmets has improved bicycle safety dramatically. Over the past 12 months, the number of serious bicycling injuries has been reduced by nearly 70 percent. Unfortunately, helmet usage has not reduced the number of all types of bike injuries. While serious head trauma has decreased by nearly 85 percent, broken bones now represent 20 percent of all reported bicycling injuries. This is a significant increase from last year’s 14 percent. The reasoning in the argument is flawed because the argument does which of the following? A. It fails to include information about any types of bicycle injuries other than head trauma and broken bones. B. It implies that the same conclusion can result from two different sets of causes. C. It fails to take into account any possible increase in the number of people riding bicycles over the past 12 months. D. It presumes that an increase in the percentage of injuries involving broken bones precludes a decrease in the actual number of such injuries. E. It ignores the fact that a 70 percent overall decrease in injuries would not allow for an 85 percent decrease in one specific type of injury. Difficulty - Hard

CR Questions June - 22 :

Q1. The energy an animal must expend to move uphill is proportional to its body weight, whereas the animal’s energy output available to perform this task is proportional to its surface area. This is the reason that small animals, like squirrel, can run up a tree trunk almost as fast as they can move on level ground, whereas large animals tend to slow down when they are moving uphill.

Which one of the following is an assumption on which the explanation above depends?

(A) The amount of energy needed to move uphill is no greater for large animals that it is for small animals.

(B) Small animals can move more rapidly than large animals can.

(C) The ratio of surface area to body weight is smaller in large animals than it is in small animals.

(D) There is little variation in the ratio of energy output to body weight among animals.

(E) The amount of energy needed to run at a given speed is proportional to the surface area of the running animal.

Difficulty - Hard

Q2. Over an extended period of time, the average seawater temperature in a region of an ocean increased by over 1 degree Celsius. During that same time, the average size of the haddock population in the region decreased by more than 25 percent. This observation led scientists to hypothesize that warmer waters favored smaller fish because their bodies were less energy intensive and better able to adapt to the warmer water. However, long-term laboratory experiments showed no changes in the average size of haddock as water temperatures were increased.

Which of the following best explains the differences between the observations in nature and those in the laboratory experiments?

(A) The measurements of fish size in the ocean were made by oceanographers, but the ones in the laboratory were made by biologists.

(B) Measurements were made more frequently in the laboratory experiments than in the ocean.

(C) A change in marine fishing regulations during the period allowed the use of nets with a more tightly spaced mesh than had previously been permitted.

(D) The population in the ocean of predators that feed on smaller haddock increased during the period.

(E) The water salinity measured in the laboratory exactly matched that of the ocean.

Difficulty - Hard

D, Energy required for uphill is proportional to body weight; energy output is proportional to surface area; small animals can run at same speed uphill and at level surface, this means that their energy expense uphill and at level surface always matches with the energy output, whereas it is not the case in larger animals. Hence, ratio of surface area to body weight should be lower in larger animals than in smaller animals.

yes, cuz nets with a more tightly spaced mesh mean real smaller fish than the mesh would survive.

The evidence cited in the study shows that workers who spend in excess of 20 hours per week directly in front of a computer monitor exhibit an average 12% reduction in cognitive abilities after 15 years in the same occupation.

The response to which of the following questions would be most helpful in evaluating the reasoning presented in the survey?

(A) Was the exhibited decline in cognitive abilities permanent or reversible?

(B) What was the reason for analyzing a 15 year period instead of a 12 or 18 year period?

(C) Did workers performing varying occupational tasks exhibit different reductions in mental capacity?

Q1. In the years 1971 to 1980, the population of the state prison system was on average about 82 percent of maximum occupancy. During those years, the average number of prisoners entering the system each year was equivalent to 9.1 percent of maximum occupancy. From the years 1981 to 1984, the average number of prisoners entering the system each year fell to 7.3 percent of maximum occupancy, yet the population of the state prison system rose to almost 89 percent of maximum occupancy.

Which of the following, if true, helps to resolve the apparent discrepancy?

(A) The average sentence of a prisoner in the state system increased from 1981 to 1984.

(B) Beginning in 1981, many of those entering the state prison system had been transferred from prisons in other states.

(C) Between 1981 and 1984, the percentage of prisoners incarcerated for violent crimes increased by 26 percent.

(D) In 1981, a legislative fact-finding committee proposed a revision of the state’s parole and work release programs.

(E) Between 1971 and 1984, the proportion of active criminals actually caught and incarcerated in the state prison system has steadily increased.

Q2. Twenty years ago, in order to rid Katarina Island of the menace of an insect larva X that was destroying rice crops, a special caterpillar-eating bird Y was introduced to the island. Now, however, overconsumption of fruits by the enormous Y population menaces many of the island’s fauna. Agriculturists plan to reduce Y’s population by using a chemical spray, which has caused devastating epidemics in Y’s population. However, there is a small chance of this chemical infecting the native Katarinian grey hornbill, an endangered fruit-eating bird. The agriculturists’ plan, therefore, is protective of agricultural interests in terms of controlling fruit consumption on the one hand but will increase the danger to native bird populations on the other.

The argument above assumes which of the following?

A. It is possible to reduce Y’s population without causing any danger to the Katarinian grey hornbill.

B. None of the birds or animals in Katarina prey on the bird Y.

C. In places where the chemical was used, the populations of bird Y were successfully controlled.

D. The use of the chemical can be controlled in a manner that will not completely wipe out the bird Y population on the island.

E. The enormous Y population is not a bigger threat to the Katarinian grey hornbill than the chemical spray.

Q1. By 1918, advances in tractor technology had led to increased yield, efficiency of labor, profit per square acre, and reduced the amount of time in which fields were planted. A:profit per square acre, and reduced the amount of time B:profit per square acre, and had reduced the amount of time C:profit per square acre, and a reduction in the amount of time D:and profit per square acre, but the amount of time was reduced E:and profit per square acre while reducing the amount of time Difficulty - Hard
Imo, increased is common. Hence increased yield, increased efficiency and increased profit must be parallel. In A- increased reduced the amount of time will not make sense. Similarly B & C can be eliminated. Between D & E, in which field must modify "the amount of time" and this prep phrase is present closer to time in E. Hence, E must be the answer.
