Hi Paul,

Below is a bit about me. Looking at Haas and Anderson.

Male, 28 years old, Puerto Rican

I’ve been in government for the past 6+ years, internship turned into a job which helped me pay my way though college while earning work experience and supporting myself and my wife who was in school as well.

Undergrad GPA is 2.9, unfortunate, but mostly due to circumstance. Taking classes not to build alternate transcript (4.0 in the 5 classes I have taken, taking Stats next). Graduated in 2003.

GMAT will be in the 660+ range. Targeting 680+ I’m taking prep course now and scoring around that, so with some hardcore studying, I’ll make it.

5 years full time work experience in public sector, moving from Public Information Intern, to Public Information Assistant to Public Communication Specialist to Public Information Officer. Youngest member of the PIO team at the County I work at. Work leadership includes Chair of a regional working group and member of the Emergency Operations Center team, leading press relations.

Post-MBA I want to get into brand marketing for consumer goods, but looking also at energy (marketing functions) as there is a big renewable energy field that I think is in its infancy and will only get bigger. I’ve been working on numerous green projects, so this would be a natural step.

Extracurricular activities include board member for a local zoo, currently working on a capital campaign that was funded by a recently passed bond. I’m also the VP of Public Relations of my Toastmasters International club, and a volunteer at a local food bank twice a month. Starting to get into competitive speeches though Toastmasters, but won’t compete until after application season.

Target schools are UCLA Anderson FEMBA program and US Berkley Haas EWMBA program. Safety school is local school Santa Clara University. Enrollment in Fall 2008, narrow window for me. Family obligations leave me to Bay Area schools (Live in San Jose) or a school with a reasonable commute, flying to LA on Saturdays is reasonable to me. I am already targeting EARLY round 1 for all three schools.

Thank you for your time and energy reading about me :)

*edit* could you also give your opinion on my two target schools (Haas and Anderson) and if this is even possible.

zakk,

I think you have a solid shot at both these programs. Your government background is unusual, your community profile is good, you appear to have some impact/leadership stories you can point to, and being Puerto Rican is a big asset in the diversity department. A 660-680 would make you competitive at these schools' part-time programs, so just make sure your whole application is strong: well executed essays, very strong reco letters, etc.

Good luck,
:)
Thank you for taking the time to respond.

You're welcome.
