Hi,

I have a situation ... one of my recommender who I believe would be a great impactful recommender has stated that he is uncomfortable in using the official email address....massive layoffs are going on in my industry...He has agreed to recommend through his personal email address though.

Recommendation from this recommender is quite valuable as I have worked under him in a remote location in hostile conditions.

My question to experts is whether using a personal email address instead of official one has any negative effect? Wouldn't the adcoms know through background check or by confirming with the recommender via phone that the recommendation is coming genuinely from the right person?

Please help.

Hi there,

I would recommend including a brief explanation in the Additional Information section (a sentence or two) explaining why a personal email address for your recommender has been given. Clients have done this in the past, and it has been absolutely fine.

Best,
Shaifali

Should not be an issue...but I agree with the above, a brief note would not hurt in the optional section

I will be straight with you, this does have a negative impact on the legitimacy of the recommendation. However if layoffs are going on, I can definitely see why this might be necessary and agree you should mention this in the optional essay or additional information section. I would also recommend that he include a link to his LINKED IN profile after his signature line in the recommendation so they can corroborate that this person is linked to your company.

I have the same query. One of my recommenders does not have an official mail ID. He hasn't been allocated one. Will it jeopardize my chances of getting an admit?
Any latest inputs on the same ?
