Hello everyone,
I am considering applying to Darden this year based on the strong employment report and other great things about the community that I have learned from the alums. My goal is to transition from tech to strategy consulting (MBB ideally), and Darden numbers look strong for consulting. I have to decide very quickly as the Round 2 deadline is approaching:
I have a few quick questions mainly on the student experience at Darden and would really appreciate if someone could chime in:
1) I have heard/read on forums that Darden's workload in 1st year is most intense among all other top business schools. While this may be okay, I wonder how this affects the social life of students? Do the students have very limited time to get to know each other outside of academics, party, etc. during the 2 years? I am asking because I want an MBA experience where I can work hard but have fun with my classmates every now and then. I spoke to a Fuqua student and really liked that students got out once every week/2 weeks to grab beers.
2) I know that Darden is great for Consulting, but how does it differ from schools like Kellogg/Ross? They all look very similar number wise, so I wonder if they all provide very similar opportunities for someone eyeing management consulting post MBA. How is Darden perceived by consulting companies compared to maybe Kellogg?
I would greatly appreciate any other thoughts/inputs you may have about Darden.
Thanks much!

Hey! The workload is super intensive. This is 100% true. You will leave your home at 7am, get back at 10pm. But social life is pretty amazing here. We have “Thursday night drinking club” and pretty much every week there is something going on. I dunno how to compare Darden to the schools you mentioned, but if you will apply for Data Science dual degree you’ll get 100% of consulting interviews with all firms. We’ll see how the offers will go in mid January ))

I mean it’s pretty amazing. The main advantage is attendance rate. Because the grade depends on the participation in class, everyone attends, which is not necessarily true for the lecture based schools. Profs don’t let you sleep/slack in class and will cold call you if they don’t see that you are engaged. Which is why you have to read 60 pages of cases a day and can’t miss your learning team meeting. Regarding the classes every single class is pretty cool for case methods and don’t listen to people who say that accounting can’t be taught that way. They are wrong. Amazing class.
This experience will not nessesarily add a lot of value to consultants/IB analysts and PE analysts. They could take some exams at Duke and miss those classes.
