Hi Jon,

Needless to say the fantastic work you/team are/is doing in these forums. Another evaluation request !

Demographics:
Male 27 years old/ India
GMAT: 700 Q44 V41; IR 2; AWA - 5

Academics:
- Bachelors, Electronics & Communication Engineering (Non-IIT)
- GPA 7.7/10
- Year of Graduation -> 2007

Work/Leadership Experience:

Sent you a pm enclosing my resume

Extracurricular:
- Avid participant in College Dramatics Club, team won some accolades
- Member of College Robotics Club, won third prize in several college competitions
- Actively organized Blood donation campaigns at organization level

Post-MBA goal:

Why MBA now: While working with my father in his proprietorship firm over the last 9 months, I had the self-realization that I do lack business acumen in certain facets, thus only an MBA program will help me plug those gaps and network with people across different industry segments.

Short Term goal: IT consulting - open to leverage my technical skills in other non IT industry segments Healthcare, Supply Chain, Capital Goods.

Long term goal: After working for quite some time in the US, I intend to start my own venture either in India or in US. This is the idea from a long term perspective depending on the opportunities I came across with.

Target Schools:

Considering your suggestion, I would like to apply to as many as 7-8 B-schools.

Hey Gian,
Got your resume!

Your profile looks pretty good, and your industry, IT in Finance can be a fantastic one, even if it's a bit flooded coming from Indian candidates. You have good solid work experience, although the danger is always of sounding a bit "Standard" Actually maybe even your school list is underestimating your chances (I don't write this a lot!!! :) ). But it's about right.

The one wildcard is your dad's firm. If it is big/exciting/promising enough it can really give a nice boost to your profile. And I would suggest using this to make your profile more unique, cause as I wrote you above, the greatest danger for your profile is that it sound too "normal", and if you can develop this family business ina nice way it can really add a unique touch to it.

Consider the below situation:

Dad's firm is small ( <5 employees), but it was a new learning experience. Made me realize that to plug in the gaps faced during my work with dad, only an MBA program will help me achieve my goals. To take the next leap and achieve my long term entrepreneurial goal, I decided to pursue an MBA.

How the firm has helped me and How I contributed to the firm ---> suppose I add this unique angle to my resume to some extent.

Now, This is RND 2/3 in most B-schools, so have to shortlist schools wherein I fit the best and plus where I can manage to grab some $$$.

Considering my overall profile, If you were in my place Jon, which 4 schools (from the below list) you should have targeted to achieve the aforementioned plans.

Fisher, Smith, SMU Cox, Marshall, Vandy, Jones, Kelley, Foster ----> you can add any other schools too

Hey dude,
I would love to give you a clear cut answer about where to apply, but there's no "Secret sauce" or "magic formula". I can evaluate your chances at the schools, but when it comes to selecting, there are just sooooo many factors, personal and professional that come into play, that I'd really have to know you and your profile and your goals intimately to give you some useful feedback. One tip I can give you is that considering that you REALLY want to make as many and as many good schools in R2 as possible is to use your deadlines to help you make your decisions.

You want to apply to as many schools as you can (that you would like to go to) that will give you the best chances,
Soooo:
- Try and make sure you for sure make some of the harder schools in R2
- If there are schools which have four rounds, you can leave those for R3
- Use deadlines to your advantage - some schools have late deadlines, which may allow you to squeeze in 2-3 more schools from your list based on deadlines alone
