Hi Jfd:

Just a few comments on your profile and things to keep in mind.

With respect to CBS J-term, you need to make sure that you have strong justification for not needing an internship. Also recognize that a lot of the traditional two-year MBA recruiting resources will not be available to you. sure, if you hustle, you'll be able to get the finance job that you want (after all it is New York City). but I would advise playing your cards closer to your chest (i.e. more conservative goals) when applying to J-term, lest you come across as too much of a career changer/ switcher.

As you know your GPA is a low. just make sure you explain this in the optional essay and don't apologize for it. Just talk about how the demands of golf and work taught you real-world lessons in prioritization and maturity. Also, you're also going to need to emphasize somewhere across your application that your quant skills are up to the task because of your GPA. of course, The nature of your work experience helps you in this regard.

What else?

I wouldn't worry about your extracurriculars too much. Sure the volunteering a few times a year is nice to have. but my opinnion is that business schools aren't necessarily looking for "good hearted" people. They are looking for leaders. so if you do talk about any type of extracurricular or volunteer experience, it's really only worth a damn if you're in a leadership position. And if you have enough "leadership" responsibilty at work then you won't need any sort of volunteer experience to make up for a deficiency and work leadership experience. in my opinion, that's really what out of the office volunteer experience is good for

Your age might be a slight concern at Wharton and Columbia. Meh, shouldn't be too much of a big deal though. I wouldn't spend too much time addressing it on your application, if at all.

The CFA designation is definitely a plus when it comes to recruiting of course. That will sell well at Wharton and CBS in particular. You don't need me to tell you that though. if you don't have all three levels right now, you can gain them in business school.

If you start at the end of this month, you shouldn't have too much of a problem reaching INSEAD's May deadline. yes, there are quite a few "motivational" and "work" essays, but a month is enough time to know those out. the only thing you would want to make sure is that you give your bosses enough time to fill out the recommendations. Don't give them one or two weeks. Give them more. An arm them with a cheat sheet of what you've done for them. They're going to need that type of help.

Respectfully,
Paul Lanzillotti

Hello,

I’m looking for an admission consultant who will be up for the task of helping me produce a complete and effective application for my 3 target schools, which are Columbia (possibly j-term), Insead (january intake) and Wharton. Would like to discuss options (other than those 3) as well with the consultant I’ll hire to get input on some schools that could be a good fit for my profile.

Basic info about me/background:
Canadian (fluent in french and english)
30 y/o (would be 31 when matriculating)

GMAT is scheduled for march 29th, looking at a 740+

Undergrad GPA was 2.82 (while working full time and playing competitive golf for the university’s team)

Other designation: CFA charterholder

Currently working at one of the Canadian big banks in wealth planning/management. I’ve been working at this firm since I started university, got 3 promotions in the past 6 years, and received 2 nomination for being one of the best performers in the past 3 years. My role includes some informal leadership.

ECs are limited since finishing undergrad, I do participate in 2-3 fundraisers for different non-profits every year. (Not organise, participate)

Fairly confident in the quality of referrals from current managers/upper management.

Goals out of mba: move from wealth to corporate finance, targeting investment banking, pretty much open to working anywhere in the world.

I’m aware that it would be a sprint but would like to apply for Insead’s round 2 (deadline may 6th 2020)

Please reach out to me, whether on this post or via pm to if you would be interested in helping me on my journey.

Thanks!
