A) but she also was a successful writer, educator, and owned her own business
All elements describing Lorinda are not parallel. Lorinda was a successful writer <noun>, educator <noun>, and owned <verb> her own business

B) but also she was a successful writer, educator, and owned her own business

comma is sometimes meant to give emphasis to her being the the first female pharmacist, and her being the successful writer , educator....
comma is sometimes used when not only and but also have parallel embedded clauses

D) but also was a successful writer, educator, and business owner
although, this option doesn't seem as perfect becos of 'was' after 'but' and comma before 'but'..however, between C and D only this follows the idiom rule of not only but also and parallelism as close possible

E) but she was also a successful writer, educator, and owned her own business
All elements describing Lorinda are not parallel. Lorinda was a successful writer <noun>, educator <noun>, and owned <verb> her own business

E) but she was also a successful writer, educator, and owned her own business

of all the choices I think D is the closest to the right answer

A, B, & E - items in list should be parallel - writer, educator, & business owner
C - but also + clause is wrong - construction is not parallel - not only x, but also y - x & y should be parallel
D-she was not only the first female pharmacist in Ohio’s history, but also was a successful writer, educator, and business owner.

LMB,....,..,accomplished a lot in her lifetime; she was not only the first female pharmacist in ohio's history, but she also was a successful x, y and owned her own business. Wait,, here incorrect parallelism list exists in second clause, writer, educator and owned her own business, Noun, Noun and verb. There is redundancy error, owned and own, in second clause.

A) but she also was a successful writer, educator, and owned her own business - incorrect for above reasons.
B) but also she was a successful writer, educator, and owned her own business - Redundancy error as mentioned above and incorrect parallelism list exists, writer, educator and owned her own business, Noun, Noun and verb.
C) but she was also a successful writer, educator, and business owner - Here, usage of pronoun, she, in the second parallel connector is redundant, she was NOT ONLY A BUT SHE WAS ALSO B, C and D.
D) but also was a successful writer, educator, and business owner - Structurally and logically parallel & removes the redundancy error. So, correct.
E) but she was also a successful writer, educator, and owned her own business - Same reasons for A, incorrect

Imo. D

Official Explanation

Lorinda Munson Bryant, founder of the Monrose School for Girls in South Orange, New Jersey, accomplished a lot in her lifetime; she was not only the first female pharmacist in Ohio’s history, but she also was a successful writer, educator, and owned her own business.

A) but she also was a successful writer, educator, and owned her own business
B) but also she was a successful writer, educator, and owned her own business
C) but she was also a successful writer, educator, and business owner
D) but also was a successful writer, educator, and business owner
E) but she was also a successful writer, educator, and owned her own business

Parallelism:
There are 3 list items that describe Bryant’s various professions that must be parallel:

A) but she also was a successful writer, educator, and owned her own business
B) but also she was a successful writer, educator, and owned her own business
C) but she was also a successful writer, educator, and business owner
D) but also was a successful writer, educator, and business owner
E) but she was also a successful writer, educator, and owned her own business

Idioms (not only X, but also Y):
The correct option needs to be parallel in kind to the “X” in the original sentence, which is highlighted here in pink.

Lorinda Munson Bryant, founder of the Monrose School for Girls in South Orange, New Jersey, accomplished a lot in her lifetime; she was not only the first female pharmacist in Ohio’s history, but she also was a successful writer, educator, and owned her own business.

In options C & E, the use of the words “she was” between the “but” and “also” don’t affect the idiom – it’s okay to stick words between there, as long as what comes after the word “also” is parallel to what comes after “not only.”

Lorinda Munson Bryant was not only the first female pharmacist in Ohio’s history,…

The only answer that gets both concepts correct is C!

Pack 8, Question 5 of 5:

Lorinda Munson Bryant, founder of the Monrose School for Girls in South Orange, New Jersey, accomplished a lot in her lifetime; she was not only the first female pharmacist in Ohio’s history, but she also was a successful writer, educator, and owned her own business.

A) but she also was a successful writer, educator, and owned her own business
B) but also she was a successful writer, educator, and owned her own business
C) but she was also a successful writer, educator, and business owner
D) but also was a successful writer, educator, and business owner
E) but she was also a successful writer, educator, and owned her own business

I was trying to find ideal option for "Not Only.. But Also" but then I was not able to figure out so I decided to look at other things.

Quote:

A) but she also was a successful writer, educator, and owned her own business
B) but also she was a successful writer, educator, and owned her own business
E) but she was also a successful writer, educator, and owned her own business

The list is of nouns. Clearly. Writer. Educator. We need a third noun. "Owned her own business" is not a noun. Gone. 3 Options One Go.

Quote:

C) but she was also a successful writer, educator, and business owner. - In the non underlined Part we have not only "A noun" So we need a noun after But Also as well. Here we don't have that. We have a repeat of "she", which is incorrect.

Quote:

D) but also was a successful writer, educator, and business owner

D is best of the lot.

Approach 2:
Let's say you want to solve it using the idiom rule only.

Quote:

A) but she also was a successful writer, educator, and owned her own business
B) but also she was a successful writer, educator, and owned her own business
C) but she was also a successful writer, educator, and business owner
D) but also was a successful writer, educator, and business owner
E) but she was also a successful writer, educator, and owned her own business

The problem is "She was" is the part outside "Not Only" and that means we should not repeat "She". Technically you can get rid of all 4 options in one go.

You just have to be extra careful :)

You were very close, TheNightKing! For the idiom to work in option D, the non-underlined part would have to say "she not only was the first..." Instead, it says "she was not only...." Since "was" is BEFORE the "not only," it's not part of the idiom. Therefore, you cannot use it in the "but also" part.

Hi NandishSS!

For this question, we need to look at the idiom "not only X, but also Y." What tripped many of you up was the placement of the word "was" either inside or outside the idiom.

The non-underlined portion of the idiom starts out like this:

she was not only the first female pharmacist in Ohio's history

If we continue the idiom, it should be worded the same:

C: but she was also a successful writer... --> Not only X, but also Y = OKAY (the "she was" between "but" and "also" is okay here)
D: but also was a successful writer... --> Not only X, but also was Y = NOT PARALLEL

I hope this helps! Check out the official explanation in the comments for more details!

You were so close aislam! Here is what I think most people got tripped up on:

For this question, we need to look at the idiom "not only X, but also Y." What tripped many of you up was the placement of the word "was" either inside or outside the idiom.

The non-underlined portion of the idiom starts out like this:

she was not only the first female pharmacist in Ohio's history

The word "was" is NOT inside the idiom, so it cannot be inside the idiom in the second part.

If we continue the idiom, it should be worded the same:

C: but she was also a successful writer... --> Not only X, but also Y = OKAY (the "she was" between "but" and "also" is okay here)
D: but also was a successful writer... --> Not only X, but also was Y = NOT PARALLEL
