Many people discover a need for glasses in middle age, a consequence of sitting too close to the television screen for long periods of time.

(A) a consequence of sitting too close to the television screen for long periods of time

(B) a consequence from sitting for long periods of time too near to the television screen

(C) a consequence which resulted from sitting too close to the television screen for long periods of time

(D) damaged from sitting too near to the television screen for long periods of time

(E) damaged because they sat too close to the television screen for long periods of time

MANHATTAN REVIEW OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:

Choices D and E both imply that the glasses or middle age are the things that have been damaged, not the eyes. ‘A consequence from’ in B is incorrect. Choice C uses the wrong verb tense, the simple past. The present should be used to form parallel structure with ‘discover’. Choice A is the correct answer.
