Many people feel that hard work deserves a reward. However, this is not true.Hard work should be its own reward, because such work intrinsically gives the
worker satisfaction when it is performed satisfactorily.
The bold phrase plays which of the following roles in the argument?
A. It provides information that undermines the conclusion
B. It points out the assumption with which the author disagrees.
C. It repeats a previously stated premise
D. It offers support for the author's conclusion
E. It is the conclusion the author's argument is designed to reach
Edited
Let's rephrase the argument a bit.

Many people feel that hard work deserves a reward. However, this is not true.Hard work intrinsically gives the worker satisfaction when it is performed satisfactorily. Hence, hard work should be its own reward.

Answer should be E.

mba1382 makes a good point... I think I'll be revising my answer to D...

What author is trying to advocate here; author is rejecting the idea that "hard work deserves a award".
Means authors stand is "Hard work do not deserves a award"

Many people feel that hard work deserves a reward. However, this is not true.

Setting premise to support his stand :
Hard work should(obligatory) be its own reward, because such work intrinsically gives the..........

Thus answer should be IMO D.

D suits better...Here the point is not to prove that Hardwork should be its own reward but to refute the commonly held belief that hard work should be rewarded.

Actually, D is an intermediate conclusion. Main conclusion is Hard work is the reward.

Bunuel, would it be possible for you to explain why the OA for this is D ?
I think the answer is E.
Hard work should be its own reward - is the main conclusion according to me and I don't see any post validly arguing why E is the incorrect answer.

IMO - Author's conclusion is "what people think is not true".. when you instantly read this mind says why? and then the boldface part comes.

It actually works by supporting the conclusion i.e. what is the author's stance. Hence D is correct. Just think what does this bold statement does in this entire argument? Provide support to author's stance.

"That is not true"..according to me, this is a counter premise/secondary conclusion. This statement counters the initial premise the author presents. But the argument builds further on that sentiment by the author. This adds context to the final conclusion.

This answer makes the most sense.

The conclusion is that it is not true that: Hard work deserves reward. So the conclusion is what is in bold, and the rest of it is just a premise leading up to the conclusion.

Even though I myself marked E and was confused why it's not E because E makes the perfect sense till I used the "Why" test. If the Conclusion is "This is not True" and we ask "Why" that's the case then the boldface along with the because is supporting the answer . But if we reverse the order and think the boldface to be conclusion, then even though the because looks like passing the "Why" test but overall the boldface looks more like a support not the final conclusion. So the correct answer is D
