they are not going to want pack the class full of Engineers of any kind, so I guess to a very small degree you are competing with them but on the whole not really.
It's unfortunate that it's not more obvious, your observations are correct yes! you are competing against people with your profile not the whole applicant pool.
The best thing you can do is Strive to have the best test score possible, but that is never going to win the game for you, they don't care what your score is if you're not interesting to them.
That said, if you are interesting to them but there's other similarly interesting candidates, who have better test scores you will lose out.
Differentiate yourself from your profile group as much as possible. This is where an admissions consultant comes in very handy.

From the posts I have read, it seems that applicants compete with other applicants who have the same demographics, occupation, and background. I am an Asian-American engineer (think Chinese, Korean) at a Fortune 100 aerospace company and I was wondering whether I would be competing against the Indian IT applicant pool for M7 admission, since some consider IT to be within engineering.
I would appreciate any and all information. Thanks in advance.
