Hi,

You have a strong profile. Don't worry about the prestige of the firm you're at, focus on what you've done to make a positive impact on the organization and how you have demonstrated leadership capabilities. The fact that you ran a social media marketing firm for nonprofit organizations is really great, and ties to your short-term career goal. Your lt goal sounds awesome and much needed. College Summit is an organization I work w that focus on a similar cause. Helping them get into college is one challenge, motivating them to stay in college is another challenge. Sounds like you've had experience in both.

When you are selecting the schools to apply to, really think through the fit w your career goals, interests, and what you hope to get out of it as well as how you see yourself contributing. Aim high!

Best of luck to you!

27/M/African American with CPA

Currently I am a financial analyst at a medium sized company and have regularly gotten high ratings. I stayed at a Big 4 firm for 1 year (actually 9 months) and absolutely hated it and left.

GMAT: 730

Northern Illinois University: 3.25/4.0 GPA with 3.95/4.0 in major (3.25 is a result of premed classes at different school while playing college football, A's in nearly all finance and accounting classes)

Started online network/forum for accounting and finance career advancement and help (site makes significant profit also). I started tutoring services for kids needing help with accounting (all free) and volunteer with inner city kids helping one get to and through college.

I have ran a probono social media marketing firm for nonprofit organizations (They will be my letters of recommendation)

Any top 25 but specifically Ross, Farqua, Stern, Booth, Kelley would be great (#1 is Ross) and looking to apply R1 2015

I want to use the MBA as a career change into a brand management role with the long term goal of starting a hands on charity helping inner city kids get motivated for college.

My concern would be that I left Big 4 and now my job doesn't scream out "prestigious", not that a Big 4 job did. My overall GPA also isn't amazing by any means. I think my strengths will be things I did outside of work with charities. What do you guys think?

Hey there,

You definitely have a great profile, a fantastic GMAT, and some interesting extracurriculars to boot. I'm about to say something I don't get to say too often - I don't think you're aiming high enough. With your GMAT, status as underrepresented, undergraduate achievements, and your professional experience, I think your safeties can still be in the top 20. I don't believe you need to go below that (e.g. Kelley). You only do this once - go for it!

Also, as Christine mentioned, think hard about goal enablement. If your long term goal is to start that nonprofit (and hats off to you for that goal!) then Yale should be on your consideration set. Then again, if brand management is what you're all about then the schools need to match curriculum + opportunities +recruiting companies. All in all, I think there's a lot of additional work you can do to create a list of target schools that are perfect for you!

To your concern about the prestige - don't worry about that. It is what it is. It sounds like you're in a good spot now with a reputable company making an impact. If you left because of fit, that's a perfectly fine and mature reason.

If you have any questions or want to talk things through, I'm happy to chat with you!

I agree that your profile is stronger than you think, and your GMAT scores are excellent. I specialize in helping clients get in to - specifically - the Ivy League, and think at least some of those should be on your list.

Happy to talk more about your profile if interested, or take a look at your full resume.
