Hi,
I have just started on my MBA preparation journey, and I'd like to know more about the various job paths available (brand management, product management etc; tech companies, consulting firms, FMCGs etc) after an MBA in Marketing, what the process is like and how is the work visa sponsorship situation for international (Indian) students for MBA programs in US and Europe

A little bit of background-
I currently work in analytics and data science in a Fortune 50 retail company in India, did my enginering(undergrad) from a top NIT (a pretty good university in India). Have a GMAT score of 740, looking to apply in 2020/2021. Lived in the Middle East till I moved for college.

Hi Red,

A few tips here:
1. every bschool publishes its employment statistics. You can check these out for all the programs on your target list.
2. That will not give you info for Indians separately. So you have 2-3 options to find that : 1. talk to current/ recent students; 2. Check Linkedin profiles, and also connect with people. 3. Reach out to heads of clubs - say consulting club if you are targeting consulting; marketing/ technology club if you are targeting product management.
3. Generally speaking, its easier for Indians to get placed in Technology/ consulting roles, because those companies are more likely to sponsor visas.
4. Lastly, if you are considering all these career options for yourself, then that's a bit of trouble. Adcoms want to see you have clarity of thought about what you wanna do in b-school and that starts with the goals. You will have to give them one clear career path not many options. You may be aware of this already, but I am just pointing it out to you

I agree.
I plan to reach out on LinkedIn soon.
I am looking for more information so thatI can have more clarity and decide about a career path before I apply a couple of years later.

I have taken a a number of management courses in my undergrad, a few in marketing and organizational design and strategy. I think I would enjoy studying marketing/strategy, which is why I want more information about the possible career paths after these concentrations too, which companies hire for which roles, what thesere roles comprise of etc.

I have seen a few posts which mention companies (atleast FMCG) are hesitant to sponsor the visa of international students for marketing roles, believing that the locals would understand the market better

Yes, thats right about FMCGs.

Regarding goals, there has to be some connection between what you have done so far and what you plan to do going forward. It will be difficult for me to comment any further because I don't know what your work profile is like, but that's logical advice

Well Congratulations on your excellent job in GMAT. My advice to you on career path would definitely be nil until we know what's your post MBA plan.

Usually, business school placements are generally categorized into two processes:

Structured Process
There are few companies (Amazon, JPMorgan etc to name a few) that provide opportunities for MBA graduates irrespective of nationality; The jobs through this route are usually modeled as rotational leadership development programs. Start-up companies hire candidates from top tier schools through the school’s career services. Approximately 1 out of 4 MBA candidates are usually placed through the structured recruitment process.

Application-based process
Companies without a proper recruiting process with schools will visit the campus for promoting their business and showcasing career opportunities in their companies. The company representative will address any queries and invite candidates for applying to open positions.
