OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

This sentence describes why meteorologists decided not to lift a severe weather warning at some point in the past. As its written, the sentence is incorrect, because perceptive (meaning "insightful") is not the correct word to describe a reduction in strength—that would be "perceptible." Also, the past perfect would be better here than the simple past; the past perfect would more clearly indicate that the announcement was made after another event that occurred even farther in the past. We can eliminate Choice (A).

Choice (B) is unnecessarily wordy and convoluted. Like Choice (A), it uses the incorrect term perceptive.

Choices (C) and (E), too, are wordy and confusing since, in Choice (C), it makes no sense to say that not any reduction has occured or, in Choice (E), that not a single reduction has occured.

Choice (D) is clear and concise; the word had creates the past perfect tense and it uses the correct term perceptible.

The correct answer is Choice (D).

I guess, the answer choice D is right only because of the word 'perceptiBLE'. The explaination for 'had' doesnt look good as 'after' is mentioned

Meteorologists announced that the severe weather warning would remain in effect because no perceptive reduction in the strength of the hurricane occurred after it made landfall earlier that day.

A) the severe weather warning would remain in effect because no perceptive reduction in the strength of the hurricane

B) warning of severe weather would continue because there had not been any perceptive increase in the hurricane’s strength that

C) severe weather would continue to be warned about because not any perceptible reduction in the hurricane’s strength had

D) the severe weather warning would remain in effect because no perceptible reduction in the strength of the hurricane had

E) hurricanes would continue to be warned because no single perceptible reduction in the strength of the hurricane

Source: Ready4GMAT

Easy to work out this question:

the non underline portion at the latter part of the sentence is " it made landfall earlier that day". This gives a hint that it relates to " Hurricane" . Now lets look the choices and apply POE

A) the severe weather warning would remain in effect because no perceptive reduction in the strength of the hurricane

kEEP FOR NOW

B) warning of severe weather would continue because there had not been any perceptive increase in the hurricane’s strength that

The sentence talks about hurricane's strength and not hurricane. Now It cannot refer to hurricane's strength and hence eliminate this choice.

C) severe weather would continue to be warned about because not any perceptible reduction in the hurricane’s strength had

Same as B

D) the severe weather warning would remain in effect because no perceptible reduction in the strength of the hurricane had

kEEP FOR NOW

E) hurricanes would continue to be warned because no single perceptible reduction in the strength of the hurricane

Keep for now.

Out of A,D,E

E makes no sense since the meaning changes hence eliminate

out of A and D , D makes more sense since perceptible reduction is the correct word.

This looks like a poor quality question.
A and D are closest to being correct, but both have mistakes.
But A used "perceptive"(wrong) while D using "past perfect" for an event that occured after a simple past event.(wrong)

In D, how would one justify the use of the past perfect ‘had occurred when it refers to a perceptible reduction in the strength of the hurricane after it made the landfall?
A and B could be dislodged for using the abstract adjective –perceptive- and C and D could be dumped for using the past perfect for a later event.
The meaning in E is absurd that the meteorologists are trying to warn hurricanes rather than cautioning the public and for the reduction being called as a single perceptible reduction.

What is the point of this topic, any insight?
thank you Daagh for refuting these kind of questions, they make SC more miserable.
