NOTE: I understand that my profile lacks programming and quantitative skills for the MFE. However, I've demonstrated some quant skills in CFA and FRM. And I've also self-taught C++ and other quantitative pre-requisites.

Hi there,

Thanks for sharing your background with us. Do you have any achievements or results (anecdotal, of course) from your self-acquired C++ skills? This can be a point of differentiation if you can demonstrate your application of this knowledge, especially being self-taught. What has your leadership capacity been like both in the office and in your community? Any involvement activities that you're particularly passionate about?

Thanks for the reply. I did devise an algorithmic strategy in C++ and backtested it on a quant platform as a part of my master's project. And I hardly can demonstrate any leadership skills except for leading my college team as the basketball team captain. Moreover, aren't the MFE programs, unlike the MBA programs, discounting the leadership since most of the grads work as analysts?

Considering this, how much of a chance do I have?

Your master's project is indeed impressive and will be considered a strong achievement. I wouldn't say that MFE programs discount leadership. They value it, and it could play to your advantage. Every program needs students to take charge and engage the local school community, so they definitely take it into consideration. I see MIT as a stretch program for you (but worth applying to). NYU is less so but still on the fringe. The other programs are aligned for your profile. What hasn't come through yet is your rationale for this degree and what you plan to do with it. I encourage you to think deeper about your story to pull together a more compelling application. Best of luck!
