Hi there,

Was hoping someone could help provide clarity on the score I received for my first CAT done through MGMAT.

Subject - Score - Percentile
Quant - 42 - 51 %
Verbal - 35 - 76 %

Total 640 - 72%

Very happy with these results but a Q42 score, as far as I can find online, should place me in the ~63% bucket, not 51%. As such, curious if my actual quant score is lower than 42 or if my percentile should be higher? Verbal seems accurate and in line with what I've scored on the GMAT Prep before, but Quant is definitely higher (score-wise, not percentile wise) than I've scored before so wanted to get some clarity on the discrepancy. It's a 40 point difference for total score so curious if I should see this as a 640 score or a 600 score.

Hope you can help.

Thanks!
Take the scores as the way they are present in from of you.
You have done well to get this result on the first mock CAT.

1. Did you take the test along with IR and AWA sections?
2. How long have you been studying?
3. Are you following any preparatory course/book?
4. When do you plan to take the GMAT?

Q42 is indeed (currently) 51% (Q45=63%). Use your GMATPrep for a more reliable score estimate. The percentiles that you see in those (GMATPrep) tests might not be accurate, but the scaled scores are the most accurate estimates you'll get. You can get the percentile data here.

Thanks Ajitesh, this is very helpful. I guess I was looking at a wrong chart in terms of percentile performance. Glad to see I did well, I am reviewing my answers to see where things went wrong!

Mgmat tests are a toughest in case of Quant especially.
You have scored 42 i.e., you can assume more if not less.
You can see this as 640 without doubt.
Mgmat test problems are very good to learn concepts especially. So take it on learning side.

Fantastic, I did feel like some of the questions asked were harder than I had seen in the OG so far. Thanks for the explanation!

Thanks Janielle! See my answers below

1. Yes I did
2. A month give or take but I just came back from a 2-week trip that I wasn't able to study in, so wanted to take this as a refresher
3. Yes, studying the MGMAT books, watching some of the Magoosh videos and obviously CATs all around :)
4. Hopefully by the end of May.

Hi ddb1990,

This recent CAT score is remarkably similar to the one that you posted back in February:

your-thoughts-on-my-study-plan-aiming-for-213893.html#p1651500

Since the overall scores are the same, and the Scaled Scores are 'close' to your original scores, this implies that you're still treating the GMAT in the same general ways as before. Considering the Schools that you plan to apply to, you'll likely need a higher GMAT score (and higher Quant Scaled Score) - to earn those higher scores, you're going to have to make some adjustments to how you handle the GMAT, which mean that you might need to invest in some new study materials and learn/practice some new Tactics.

Thanks Rich - it does seem like my Quant went up from Q39 to Q42, so I feel there has been improvement - in addition, I'm recognizing a lot more questions than I did originally. I've only been able to study for roughly 4 weeks due to the earlier trip. What changes from my original study plan would you propose?

Thanks,

Damien

Hi Damien,

Those Scaled Scores are relatively close to one another, which MIGHT mean that you're improving (but it's also possible that you got a bit 'lucky' in spots or the program randomly assigned you questions that you are naturally a bit more 'comfortable' with).

Before I offer any suggestions about your study plan, you should probably continue studying as you see fit for the next 1-2 weeks (since you're getting back into your studies after a short break). Then take a new FULL-LENGTH CAT (with the Essay and IR sections). That score result will help to define if you're improving on your own or if big adjustment is needed.

Thanks Rich - this is very helpful. I realized when I took the CAT when I got back, that while a lot of questions were still difficult, I was recognizing the concepts being tested much more and at times was able to apply strategies I never knew existed before I started studying, so I'm feeling relatively comfortable about my study plan (at the moment).

Just before I left on my trip, I actually scored a 660 on GMATPrep with a V44 - so I feel like I can make a lot of headway focusing on Quant.

Thanks for helping out and responding so quickly.
