Hello all,

I have just signed up to the gmat club, although the gmat has been on my radar since September of last year. I am from the uk and currently in my 2nd year of undergrad. My A-levels were way below my hopes/expectations, and I received BBB. For personal reasons I ended up at what is very much a non target uni, ranked outside the top 30. Over the last year and a half having come to the conclusion that I believe my skill set is best suited to consulting I have realised the gmat, and a strong msc degree is my best chance at this path.

So with the bad out of the way, I was Head boy at my sixth form, President of the economics society at uni, captain of my football team before uni and here too. But my best asset is definitely my maths, or more specifically numerical skills. In September I blindly took a gmat focus test (which probably wasn't the best idea, but I knew no better at the time) and scored 655. I am confident this can get to around 700, and I aim to take another practice in 2 weeks, before evaluating taking a real exam in mid march.

This would primarily be to try and secure the best internship I can, as with my current CV, uni, and a level grades I see this as my best opportunity.
I am however, after reading other posts, skeptical of applying to within the UK. Whilst I hope to get a first, and at minimum a high 2:1, I think my academic past may hinder my chances of an msc in the uk, as our universities tend to favour academia above a strong gmat...?

any advice on this would be great, or any further questions please ask away, I am aware I am not in a good position, but I definitely have the potential to improve it.

Hi Duncomo Hope you are doing great and thanks for sharing about your concerns.

I can give you some quick surface-level tips, although I do not know which colleges you currently have in mind for the MSc.
Specific to the UK (but also true for most colleges in the EU and the US that offer MSc courses), some will have a greater affinity for practical experience and knowledge- like internships or short work experience- while others will have a strong inclination toward academic appreciation. For example, one school that comes to my mind for its emphasis on academic appreciation is LSE. They expect you to speak ina certain manner in the applications. On the other hand, top MiM programs like the one at LBS place a lot of value on candidates' practical experience.

With this understanding, you should evaluate which schools may be better suited when your grades are not the best but you still have a chance to strengthen your profile by pursuing value-added internships. Regardless, whenever you apply, play smart and balance the academic focus with practical experience in the right proportion through your narrative styling. I have done this a lot for my mentees who went to LSE.

You can also bring out your love of learning through practical experiences, so what I am really trying to say is don’t let your academics limit you or keep you from applying. What you say in your application and how you say it largely determine the outcome. You should also establish a personal connection with the schools you are applying to- visit campuses, meet professors, and build rapport to create a strong impression. Successful candidates do this a lot!

Happy to answer any other questions

Best wishes

Profile evaluation:

Low GPA: 7,25/10 CPGA but in a country with grade inflation (average is 7,75/10) however I have a big upwards trend (up to top 20 % in the 3rd B.Sc year) explained in the essays.
B.Sc in Business Administration, from a local target, double-degree with the best french university.
GMAT FE of 695 and toefl of 103
Trilingual: English, French, German
lots of extracurriculars, and some interesting work experience (however no big brand name except big 4)
Assuming very polished essays, how are my chances for:
HEC, ESSEC, ESCP (underrepresented nationality for ESSEC/ESCP - not for HEC)

Thanks a lot in advance !

Hi antoniodagostino ! With the given information, your profile looks nice with a good GMAT FE(695) but your GPA (7.25/10) might be a concern. However, your strong upward trend, double-degree with a top French university, trilingual abilities (English, French, German), and extensive extracurriculars shall help balance these concerns. Your work experience, while lacking major brand names apart from a Big 4 firm, can stand out if it demonstrates leadership, impact, and international exposure. Given your underrepresented nationality at ESSEC and ESCP, your chances can improve further. To strengthen your applications, strong essays, LORs, and a clear narrative can still make you a competitive candidate across all 3 schools. We would love to learn more about your profile in detail, it will help us identify if you can pull out good stories from your experience. Please feel free to book a profile evaluation call. Good luck!

Subject: Profile Evaluation

Hello everyone,

I just joined Gmat club and came across this very helpful chat of profile evaluation. My decision to give Gmat is 2 months old. I plan on applying for 4th round of MiM at LBS in May 2025 and have not shortlisted any other business schools as I want to live in a English speaking country but I welcome any other suggestions of MiM program schools that I should aim for.

I would be eternally grateful if my profile is evaluated:
Background: Indian, Female, Age: 26 years.
Brief about myself: I am a 2023 Law School graduate looking to pivot into a corporate career and with my limited work ex, I wanted to know if MiM is correct choice or me.
Undergrad: First class - B.A.,LL.B. (Hons. in criminal law), 8.69/10 CGPA from Nirma University (Ahmedabad, India). (Top 10% of the batch), (100% Merit-based scholarship holder).
Work ex: Litigation lawyer (PQE: 1.5 Yrs) based in Delhi working at chambers of a senior advocate. Drafting and arguing civil/criminal matters in Supreme court and High Courts (No corporate law experience and no major brand law firm).
International Exposure: Exchange semester in Europe. (Transcripts available).
Publication: one (book chapter on human rights issues in Springer). Additionally I was research assistants to various proffs during undergrad.
Internships: With law firms, sitting judges, NGOs.
Significant Roles:
§ As Advocate: Represented 30 underprivileged students in the NEET-UG review petition before Supreme Court of India.
§ As Volunteer: worked at UNHCR affiliated NGO in Delhi for 2 months.
§ Limited leadership roles but I was sports captain in my high school (a boarding school), Chief-editor of legal-literary e-magazine during undergrad.
GMAT: Pending (I will be giving it in mid-April with 50 days of preparation).
Mindset: Ready to put in legit hard work in the application process as I understand the shift from Law to MiM would not be easy (especially with no corporate background). I would be grateful for any advice that you might have. Please don't hold back any thoughts you might have.
Looking forward to the evaluation. Thanks!

International Exposure: extensive travel to 60 countries around the world, high school exchange in Canada
GMAT FE: 685
Additional education: Quantitative and finance MOOC courses, economics courses at the Oxford Continuing Education Department, GMAC Statistics Fundamentals

Hi Chris01, I hope you are doing well! Your profile has some strengths, such as a good academic background (2:1 honors), relevant work experience in energy and mobility, and strong international exposure. Your GMAT FE score of 685 is competitive. However, your extracurriculars and leadership experience appear limited, which could be a weakness, as top programs seek well-rounded candidates with demonstrated impact. Strengthening your personal statement by emphasizing your analytical skills, global mindset, and motivation for CEMS could help. Additionally, highlighting any teamwork, leadership, or problem-solving experiences from work or university projects would be beneficial. Overall your profile seem to have good chances the mentioned programs. What's going to matter most in your application is how you connect the experiential dots and build a great story to stand out from other applicants in the pool. You can take a look at this BLOG, hope it helps. Good luck!

Hi Chris01
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Your profile looks pretty interesting. You've got that European Politics and Business degree, which is cool, and those extra finance and stats courses are a smart move.

Your FE score is decent too, and honestly, traveling to 60 countries, Wow! It shows you're definitely not afraid of stepping outside your comfort zone. The work experience, even if it's not super long, is in relevant areas, which is good. NUS MiM + CEMS is tough, no doubt, but you've got some solid points.

Those CEMS exchange dreams at LSE and Cornell might look a bit ambitious, but hey, aim high, right? You mentioned solo hobbies, which are cool, but maybe think about how you can show some teamwork stuff too. How did those team projects really go? And what exactly did you learn from them? For that personal statement, really try to connect all your experiences into a story that shows why you want to do management.

Think about challenges that you faced on your travels or at work that made you want to pursue this? Let’s talk more on making your application really shine.

Hi delhimain
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, being a lawyer, especially with good grades and a scholarship shows that you are a smart and hardworking individual. The time you spent in Europe for your exchange is also another plus for your profile, and writing a book chapter? That's impressive too! Helping students in the Supreme Court and volunteering with a refugee organization shows your ability to work for the betterment of society.

Moving from law to business is indeed a big change, but you've got a lot of good stuff in your profile. However, not having corporate experience is something to think about, but all your other experiences are strong. LBS is tough to get into, so do your best on the GMAT. Some schools that like people from different backgrounds, like INSEAD or maybe HEC Paris, might be good options for you too.

For your application, show adcoms how being a lawyer helps you in business. Think about how you're good at thinking, solving problems, and talking to people. It will also be crucial for you to highlight what skills are you looking to gain from the MiM, and how will it help you in your career.

Let’s talk more about making your application shine.

Hello timhenn,

You have a great GMAT score and a number of talking points that would prove to be very value adding. The goals make sense as well.

You would definitely be eligible for scholarships.

For now, your focus should be on identifying the schools you wish to target post which you should focus on crafting holistic applications.

All the best!

thanks for the insight. In Europe that would be HEC, LBS, SSE and maybe INSEAD. Are there any schools in the US that would offer better MiM programs? especially considering I might want to stay in Europe. I've heard that MiM aren't that highly valued in the US.

Hi timhenn

These are a few I could recommend in the US. These are among the best based on my research.

What you must know about top MiM programs in the USA

But you are absolutely right, MiM programs are much more mature and better integrated into recruitment channels in Europe. If your long-term goals are in management consulting or venture capital, I would even go so far as to say that you should prioritize MiM programs associated with globally known MBA brands. In most cases, it is the strength of an institution’s MBA program that drives industry partnerships, shapes alumni influence, and opens doors to world-class recruiter contacts. In competitive fields, it is not just the content of the program that has an impact on your career outcome, but also the ecosystem you have access to, and a prestigious MBA school often offers that advantage.

Profile Evaluation:

Background and nationality: German, 23
Undergrad Information: Double Degree in Int Management in Germany and Italy. GPA 3,7 or 30/30
GMAT/GRE: 695 FE
Work experience and leadership: 2 Consulting Internships, ScaleUp Strategy, Audit Working Student
Community and others: Tutoring, Charity Sport Initiative, Research Assistant, Student Consulting, University Sustainability Initiative
Post Master goals: Consulting/VC

I'd like to aim for the best programs in Europe and possibly also the US, depending on eligibility for scholarships. I'd be happy to receive any evaluation, especially if you think I could be eligible for scholarships in the US and if that would even make sense in my position.

Thank you for sharing your profile timhenn . You are in a good position to apply to top-tier MiM programs in Europe, with potential opportunities in the U.S. as well. Your academic record is strong, with a GPA of 3.7 (and a 30/30 in the Italian grading system), earned through a double degree in International Management from institutions in both Germany and Italy. This not only demonstrates academic excellence but also shows your adaptability and global exposure, qualities highly valued by international business schools.

Your GMAT Focus Edition score of 695 is a good asset, could potentially enhance your chances for scholarships. Your professional experience, which is ideal for MiM applicants, is diverse and strategic. Two consulting internships, a strategy role at a ScaleUp, and work in audit as a student worker showcase your hands-on experience across relevant business domains. This is particularly attractive to programs that emphasize employability and career outcomes in consulting.

Equally impressive is your extracurricular and leadership track record. Your involvement in tutoring, a charity sports initiative, student consulting, and university sustainability efforts speaks volumes about your initiative, impact, and alignment with values-driven leadership, traits schools like LBS, IE, and HEC highly appreciate. These elements can differentiate you significantly when applying for both admissions and scholarships.

Your post-MiM goals in consulting and venture capital are ambitious. Most top European MiM schools, such as HEC Paris, LBS, IE Business School, and ESSEC, have good consulting placements and alumni networks in firms like McKinsey, Bain, and BCG. VC is more niche but achievable, especially if you take advantage of startup ecosystems, incubators, and electives during your studies.

While U.S. programs such as Duke MMS, Michigan Ross MAcc, are worth exploring, keep in mind that scholarships are fewer and often more competitive for international MiM candidates.

With a focused application strategy and a clear narrative around your leadership, impact, and career goals, you will likely receive offers from top MiM programs, possibly with scholarships. If you'd like to discuss more about your profile, feel to reach out. Good luck
