In my opinion "Give back" means "to support" or "make donations". If you add "it" then it means that MrKing took the fortune from the community.

A. an individual of considerable influence, created a personal fortune and gave back
B. an individual of considerable influence, he created a personal fortune and gave back
C. an individual of considerable influence created a personal fortune and gave back
D. an individual of considerable influence, created a personal fortune and gave it back
E. an individual of considerable influence, created a personal fortune and then he gave it back

Source: Test Prep Review

A. an individual of considerable influence, created a personal fortune and gave back - Correct
B. an individual of considerable influence, he created a personal fortune and gave back - "he" is not needed
C. an individual of considerable influence created a personal fortune and gave back - missing comma
D. an individual of considerable influence, created a personal fortune and gave it back - a personal fortune cannot be given back
E. an individual of considerable influence, created a personal fortune and then he gave it back - same as B and D

Generally, SC answers should make the original sentence correct without changing the meaning if possible. The addition of 'it' in D changes the meaning to say that he gave his entire fortune back to the community (gave it back v. gave part of it back), which is a change in meaning which we cannot infer, as maybe he gave an amount equal to 1/4 or 1/2 back. Thus, A is the best answer.
