Hi,
This is Lalitha and I completed my undergrad in Information Technology in 2009 and currently working with Tata Consultancy Services,India as a software developer for the last 6 months.My gpa is close to 3.8 and I have also been working as a part time freelance writer for leading newspapers in India on various genres like retail,cinema,celebrity chats etc...for the past one year and also head a non profit group to provide basic amenities to the children who are in need and have also been actively involved in facilitating a structured learning program for them.
I have always been passionate about getting into HR and right now,after working on the technical side for 6 months,I'm certain that it's the people whom I want to interact with more than computers.I'm confused about a whole lot of stuff and I would like to sort them out before getting into the course required for entering the HR domain.
1.I'm still contemplating whether a MBA or MS in HR in the U.S is better but one of the main reasons that I'm thinking about doing a MS in HR instead of MBA is due to the fact that I have very less work experience(8 months) and MBA mandates at least 2 years of work experience.So I thought that getting into masters (which requires no work experience) would be better since I want to enter into HR as soon as possible and a masters would also help me learn all aspects of HR in detail.Am I right or wrong?Which is the better one-MBA or MS in HR or do they both have equal weightage when it comes to placements?
2.I would like to start my masters in HR in 2011 and I'm a little apprehensive about the fact that I have very little work experience though I'm really interested in getting into HR.Quite a few people and online forums have suggested that top universities in the U.S for HR like Cornell, Ohio state university,Purdue have a really good course structure for masters in HR.Is work experience mandatory for getting into these universities and is preference given to those with work experience for the course?Will my extra skill set of being a freelance writer and the head of a non profit group add weightage to my profile?
3 A number of forums have also suggested against doing a masters in HR in the U.S since it's very difficult for Indians to cope up with their American counterparts especially in the HR domain.What do you think about this and should I start applying for a masters in HR for 2011 or should I just wait for another 3 years and then go for a MBA ?
4.I am also interested in specializing in public relations and is there an MBA or MS in PR and what are the top schools for PR?
Please guide me in what my next step of action should be.

You are correct in thinking that most MBA programs will require more work experience. If you do choose to go the MBA route then I recommend seeking leadership and "stretch" roles at work so that you will be a stronger applicant when the time comes. An MBA with a focus in marketing would be a good foundation for a career in PR. However, if you are definitely sure that HR is where you want to be then you need to further research those programs.
I recommend that you look at some of the programs you're interested in (both MBA and HR) and find our what type of HR placements their career services department has done in the past. This will give you an idea of whether the school is a good springboard for a career in HR and also if there is a strong alumni network in that field.
