Hi,

I hope to submit an application toMichigan for a chance at a transition from engineering into management consulting. I believe the program would fit my characteristics in what I look for in a school (career path, school pride, and peer-to-peer networking). Here are my stats:

GMAT: 710 (49Q/38V)
GPA: 3.1
Dual Degree: Mechanical Engineering & Material Science Engineering from Top 50 School
Experience: 4 years in automotive manufacturing
Background: First Generation Southeast Asian American
Gender: Male
Extracurricular: Founder and co-leader of a Professionals Group within my company that organizes events to promote professional development and networking

I am planning to take business related courses over the summer to help justify my lower GPA, but would like to know what my chances are to get in R1 with my current background. I looked at my enhanced test report and found no areas where I did worse in, so I don't know if I will see great improvement if I were to retake the GMAT. Also, with Michigan having so many applicants from the automotive sector, I am doubting my chances are going to be good. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

You'll have a good shot. GPA is lower, but it's not really that low. Classes are a good idea if you have time and will show dedication. Just start working on stringing together a story line and making sure everything fits together. You should have a good shot at Ross and the other schools in that category (Darden, SOM, Fuqua, etc).

Business schools in general like people in your demographic. Your stats, age, background all fit into what they want.
Think of it like this: There is really no algorithm to determine your acceptance rate. But your profile definitely increases the probability. Just make sure you have a convincing reason to go to business school. This is one of the soft skills that goes over the head of a lot of people with engineering backgrounds. Your stats won't make them think twice. Failing to sell your story will.
