'and' parallelism marker, what comes after and before needs to be parallel.
we have 'that' clause after 'and' but don't have 'that' one before 'and' hece, this structure is incorrect.

Issue about SV agreement, verb 'are' and subject 'the mopane worm' are in non-underlined part of the sentence, so we cannot change it, and need to take it as it is.
Question source is non-official, I think we don't get such questions in official test.
Or unless, 'the' before the 'mopane worm' lets us consider 'them' as a whole group'... but in this case we also need singular subject...
Nevermind, we will wait for OE

POE

Tis question tests parallelism, so let's look at each answer choice separately, and examine form parallelism standpoint.

(A) consumed by millions of Africans and that resembled silkworms

(B) consumed by millions of Africans and resembling silkworms
Seems good enough, consumed // to resembling.
both of them plays same role and fucntions - as ajective - describes worm

for more about v-ed and v-ing //-ism, please read here ---->

(C) that is consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms
this structure is awful, that is = that are - is incorrect, should be same verb singular-singular or plural-plural, as they both modifying the same noun

(D) that is consumed by millions of Africans and it resembles silkworms
it - antecedent? there is no parallelism at all

(E) consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms
that - error, no parallelism

With and sighted, we have to look for parallelism in the underlined part.

(A) consumed by millions of Africans and that resembled silkworms
There is no that in the first item

(B) consumed by millions of Africans and resembling silkworms
item 1 & 2 are phrases and parallel

(C) that is consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms
item 1 is a clause & item 2 is a phrase. Not parallel

(D) that is consumed by millions of Africans and it resembles silkworms
item 1 has that and item 2 doesn't have

(E) consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms
item 2 has that and item 1 doesn't have

This sentence tests your knowledge of modifier and parallelism
(A) consumed by millions of Africans and that resembled silkworms-Incorrect. consumed by millions of Africans and that resembled silkworms are both modifiers modifying the noun large caterpillar. however; Their structure isn't parallel. we don't really need the pronoun that.
(B) consumed by millions of Africans and resembling silkworms - Correct. lets keep this. consumed by millions of Africans is a verb ed modifier and resembling silkworms is a verb- ing modifer. as per the rules of modifier, a verb ed modifier can very well be parallel to a verb - ing modifier. Hence this sentence maintains the parallel structure.
(C) that is consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms- Incorrect. is consumed is a verb and resembling silkworms is a verb ing modifier. this distorts the parallelism
(D) that is consumed by millions of Africans and it resembles silkworms- Incorrect .the structure here must be that is consumed and that resembles silkworms. it is unnecessary as we already know what is being modified
(E) consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms- Incorrect. that is unnecessary and distorts the parallelism between two modifers

The 2 descriptions of the Mopane worm, viz., consumption by millions of Africans and resembling silkworms, should be parallel. However, the usage of 'that' introduces a parallelism error.

Native to the warmer parts of southern Africa, the mopane worm, a large caterpillar consumed by millions of Africans and that resembled silkworms, are often canned in tomato sauce or chili sauce to enhance flavor.

(A) consumed by millions of Africans and that resembled silkworms - Wrong as discussed above

(B) consumed by millions of Africans and resembling silkworms - Correct

(C) that is consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms - Non-parallel list. Instead of 'that, resembling', it should be 'that resembles'

(D) that is consumed by millions of Africans and it resembles silkworms - Non-parallel list. Instead of 'it', it should be 'that'

(E) consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms - Non-parallel list. Instead of 'that, resembling', it should be 'resembling'

(C) that is consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms.Incorrect." is consumed " is a verb and " resembling silkworm" is a verb -ing modifier which distorts the parallelism structure.

(D) that is consumed by millions of Africans and it resembles silkworms.Incorrect."it" is unnecessarily introduced.

"a large caterpillar consumed by millions of Africans and that resembled silkworms," is an appositive and appositive doesn't make complete sense.

(A) consumed by millions of Africans and that resembled silkworms
Improper appositive ("that resembled silkworms" can stand on its own).

(B) consumed by millions of Africans and resembling silkworms
Doesn't have any error..............................Correct Answer.

(C) that is consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms
This option will distort the meaning of the sentence (improper appositive) + SVA error (...that, resembling silkworms are..).

(D) that is consumed by millions of Africans and it resembles silkworms
Meaning of sentence is distorted with this option (improper appositive) + SVA error (...it resembles silkworms are...).

(E) consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms
This option will distort the meaning of the sentence (improper appositive) + SVA error (...that, resembling silkworms are...).

Error Analysis:
'that resembled' gives a wrong meaning by saying that 'mopane worm' once resembled 'silkworms', but not anymore. Intended meaning is to say 'Mopane Worm is a large caterpillar and it resembles silk worms. We need verb+ing modifier 'resembling'

(A) consumed by millions of Africans and that resembled silkworms - Incorrect, for the reasons stated in the error analysis
(B) consumed by millions of Africans and resembling silkworms- Correct
(C) that is consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms - Incorrect, its unclear as what exactly 'that' is doing in the sentence. Further, modifier 'resembling' which is modifying 'caterpillar' is placed incorrectly.
(D) that is consumed by millions of Africans and it resembles silkworms - Incorrect, usage of 'it' is redundant.
(E) consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms - Incorrect, same issue with 'that' as seen in C.

Yes! You are correct. The subject namely "the worm" is singular. You see it is said to be "a large caterpillar". One can dismiss all the choices by that S-V error alone. This thread has already run 73 postings and your are the first to point out the error, I suppose. Great!!

Sometimes we tend to miss the forest for the tree.

yes, as long as both are modifiers. That means, a verb-ing as part of a verbal phrase and as a gerund as well as 'verb-ed' as a past tense are excluded from the ambit.

Let's also appreciate that while they can be structurally parallel, they may not be logically parallel ( all the times) depending upon the context.

Quote:
Starting from the Tamiraparani in the deep south and intercepted by many others, the rivers systems are the backbones of India's life and economics.

Here the modifiers 'starting' and 'intercepted', though technically are parallel, do not convey any sense because of a dangling modification. Per se, the river systems themselves , though starting with Tamiraparani , are not intercepted by many other river systems; each river system is a disparate system of its own and it does not intercept other river systems.

Here, the following version would be more accurate.

Quote:
Starting from the Tamiraparani in the deep south and intercepting the entire length of the country, the rivers systems are the backbones of India's life and economics.

Hope I am not more confusing after all.

Both consumed and resembling are participles (modifiers) in option B.

"is" is the verb.

Native to the warmer parts of southern Africa, the mopane worm, a large caterpillar consumed by millions of Africans and that resembled silkworms, is often canned in tomato sauce or chili sauce to enhance flavor.

(A) consumed by millions of Africans and that resembled silkworms
(B) consumed by millions of Africans and resembling silkworms
(C) that is consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms
(D) that is consumed by millions of Africans and it resembles silkworms
(E) consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms

the key is to notice that that consumed is not parallel with resembled.

the subject is moping worm, consumed is a verb-ed modifier because the "doer" of consumed is not the worm. So in order to be parallel be must use a word that is nor a verb but a modifier. That is resembling.

This is a Sentence Correction (SC) question, and we need to identify if the option A is correct or there is another more suitable option. Let us have a closer look at all options:
(A) consumed by millions of Africans and that resembled silkworms - The phrase "and that resembled silkworms" is awkward and does not have parallel structure to the previous part of the sentence "caterpillar consumed by Africans". Also after comma, we have the word "are" and in order to have a correct grammatical structure, we need the word "which". Incorrect
(B) consumed by millions of Africans and resembling silkworms - This version of sentence is concise and clear. It is easy to understand what the sentence states and there are no grammatical mistakes. Both structures "consumed by millions of Africans" and "resembling silkworms" are parallel to each other. Correct
(C) that is consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms - In this structure, it can be incorrectly thought that the caterpillar is consumed by Africans and "that" what does not make any logical sense. Incorrect
(D) that is consumed by millions of Africans and it resembles silkworms - This version of sentence states that large caterpillar and it resembes silkworms, which is both grammatically and logically incorrect. Incorrect
(E) consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms - This version of sentence also incorrectly states that caterpillars are consumed by Africans and "that". Incorrect

Answer: B

Here, how consumed and resembling are parallel?
