Hello Paul,
I would appreciate your comments on my profile and targets.
Background
I am 30, 8,5 yrs. of experience (6 yrs. of management experience). I was born in provincial city in Russia, finished school and local technical university there. I am an engineer for telecommunications. During my studying at Un. I decided to get a second diploma prior to finishing and started evening courses for interpreter of English and German. So upon graduate from my university I had two specialties and managed to join a large local telecommunication equipment manufacturer.
I occupied a position of a sales engineer in the export department. I started with some foreign trade operations, logistics, specifying of technical solutions for our customers, technical and commercial translations etc. After a year of work I discovered that it would make a sense to obtain a degree in marketing and foreign trade, so I entered Foreign Trade academy in Moscow where I studied 3 years by correspondence.
That time I was promoted to a position of a regional sales manager. I was responsible for all export in Central Asia region and spent a lot of time in my business trips in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Mongolia. I took part in a number of projects for modernization of telecom networks for private and public operators. For some of the projects I cooperated with leading Chinese and Korean manufacturers operating in the region. I was managing projects for up to 1,5 mln. USD, which lasted up to 3 years , i.e. Modernization of Operating Telecommunication Systems for Mongolian Railways.
In 2 years, when I was 25, I got a promotion to the head of export department. I managed some 8 to 10 people and was responsible for all companies export activities, including foreign exhibitions and international cooperation. For those 3 years when I was a head of exports our sales abroad had increased by 30-50% annually. That was not only my and my department merit but also a market increase; however we did our best to follow the trends.
After that the company reorganized its marketing and sales structures and I received a marketing department to manage. I managed personally some large projects, and was responsible for marketing and promotion of currently equipment produced. However much more time I spent not on managing the department, planning and distributing tasks, but on searching for new approaches and opportunities in the market.
Frankly speaking I searched for my personal opportunities as well and I succeed.
Now I work for one of the largest investing and developing group in Russia. I am a project manager for individual affordable housing project. The sphere of my responsibilities is transferring of manufacturing and constructing technology from Canada, that basically comprises purchasing and logistics of house packages, supervising of Canadian service people, project structuring and developing.
Additional Info
In 2006 I took part and won in the TV project
The Apprentice ® (Russian licensed version). I noticed a commercial stating that there would be a second season of the show. I considered the information, took a day to discuss this with my wife and sent my portfolio. After two castings I was invited to the show and went through all the tasks, being the most frequent pretender to redundancy. But I stood the test and won. The show was being shot for 2 months and broadcasted for 4 months every given Sunday last year. I got a good job offer and compensation package.
My B-schools
I am looking for ExMBA programs, since they don’t require interrupt my project and occupation.
I am sure that I have sufficient background for ExMBA and will gain from it much more than from full-time programs. Besides I will not need to take my family with me, that will be rather costly.
By the moment I have 2 targets: Chicago ExMBA Europe (London) and LBS/Columbia EMBA-Global (London). I am going to specialise in corporate finance, invest banking and capital markets.
I am having my GMAT in 2 weeks and hope to score 620-680, since I’ve been training for 3 months. The average score for EMBA-Global -650, and Chicago does not require it at all.
My questions
1. Am I right targeting at EMBA?
2. How do you consider my choice of schools? Which schools would you recommend?
3. What should I adjust in me to match those schools expectations?
4. How can I waive TOEFL?
Thank you in advance!
Sincerely,
chirkov
