YashaswaniL Hi! I can see how complicated things are for you right now. Please keep trying to look for openings through your referrals. If the functional pivot does not work, can you get back in the same role and then evaluate MBA programs as exit paths?
At some point, you will have to accept that business schools don’t like to be a candidate’s way out of a career gap. So if you have a job in hand pre-MBA, it can push your case miles ahead.

I am reiterating something I have shared many times on this platform. Start looking at startups and network extensively with employees there. Indian startups are the best places to restart careers. I have seen people with as long as over four years of career break for random reasons get into some top, well-known startup spinoffs through referrals. This is the reality of the job market today. Networking is everything, and with someone’s word to vouch for you, people are ready to give you a chance. Alternatively, you can completely change your domain and pivot to the impact sector. There may be many good roles that are low paying but super strategic from a pre-MBA experience point of view. If someone tells you that you can get through without first solving for what I have told you above, please do not fall for that.

Happy to guide you should you want more advice

Best wishes

Thousands of applicants apply to Harvard every year — but only about 900 get in. What do those 900 admits do differently? In this session, Liza Weale (Gatehouse Admissions) breaks down what top admits understand that others miss.

Can you please evaluate my profile and provide some guidance on my chances of getting shortlisted.
Academic Background:
• Class X (CBSE): 8.8 CGPA
• Class XII (CBSE): 91%
• B.Com (Hons), DU SOL: 60%
• Chartered Accountant: 53% (Final)
Professional Experience: 6+ Years
• Articleship (3 years) – Completed from a mid-sized CA firm in Delhi, with core exposure to Audit, Taxation, Accounting, and Finance. (I would also like to understand whether this period is considered as formal work experience for executive programs.)
• Post-Qualification Experience:
1. NatWest Markets (RBS) – Worked for 7 months as a Senior Analyst in Regulatory Reporting (Derivatives), handling trade and transaction reporting.
2. Own CA Practice – Managed and operated my own firm in Delhi for approximately 2 years and 3 months, handling end-to-end client engagements across finance, compliance, and advisory.
3. Current Role – Working as a Credit Manager in Business Banking at one of India’s leading banks for the past 3 months. My role involves credit assessment, financial analysis, and risk evaluation of business profiles.
Test Scores:
• GMAT: Not attempted yet
I am particularly targeting the one-year Executive MBA program at IIM Ahmedabad or Tier 1 B Schools and would value your honest assessment of my profile, along with any suggestions on how I can strengthen my chances.
