Hi Scott!
This is going to be REALLY long, and I apologise in advance.
I think i'm an unconventional applicant. Female, 22, India.
I will graduate from veterinary school in 2011.
I want to work in habitat conservation and sustainable development in developing countries.
I've worked as a journalist all through high school and have written for the biggest national publications. I worked because I enjoyed writing and the whole experience but did not think of it as a career. (2 years)
I've worked as a practicing veterinarian part-time for 1 year and full time for 6 months, both as a part of my degree and for non profits. Again, self-satisfaction, but not my career goal.(1.5 years)
By 2011 I will have interned in environment for 1 year. This is because of lack of time and opportunity, not lack of interest.
Now all of this is pre-graduate level and part-time so this effectively brings my work experience to ZERO.
My goal is the joint Masters of Environmental Management from Yale FES and MBA from YSOM.
I'm relatively much more qualified for the MEM degree so my plan is to apply to YSOM only after and if I get into YFES.
Duke has a similar program but right now I have eyes only for yale :/
I have a lot of research experience. I've worked under researchers, done independent research and even organised and run research projects. I have presented at 2 conferences and published 1 paper.
I believe an MBA is right for me right now because I have developed analytical and communcation skills, but i need to learn the inner workings of business to be able to execute the kinds of projects I want to.
I don't think prior work experience in my field will help me much because the kind of work i want to do simply does not exist in rural India. Its bureaucratic, resistant and convoluted... and I think I need exceptionally innovative training in business to be able to achieve anything in fractious developing countries.
So. This is my rationale.
I would really like your opinion on whether this argument will fly with adcoms.
I'm in year 4 out of 5 years of my Veterinary degree. Year 1-3 i have been in the top 20% and year 4 i'm in the top 5% at my university. Some leadership roles in student organisations. Loads of volunteer work. Won one scholarship and one grant for my research work.
I know the applicants to elite MBA schools are supernatural beings with supernatural scores and awards and extracurriculars.
I'm just hoping my focused intent and ancillary skills can somehow forgive my newbieness. Also, what kind of GRE/GMAT score would give me a better chance?
