My answer is (D). It took me 40 seconds.

(A) "but", as a coordinating conjunction, should be used in the following fashion to construct a coordinating sentence: IC1 + Comma + FANBOYS + IC2. (IC stands for Independent Clause.) This version does not provide the first IC.

(BC) can be eliminated because "English bulldogs" do not agree with "its" in the modifier.

(E) The use of present progressive tense (is being cherished) and "now" is redundant.
Even after "now" is removed, it is still hard to justify progressive tense.
