Those are Absolute Value (modulus) Symbols . The absolute value (or modulus) $$|x|$$ of a real number x is x's numerical value without regard to its sign.

For example, $$|3| = 3$$; $$|-12| = 12$$; $$|-1.3|=1.3$$; $$|0|=0$$.

Check for more below:

The symbol is called Modulus and it gives the absolute value of the number inside the symbol (2 vertical bars).

For eg |-2| = 2 and |2| = 2.

You can find more about this concept here : https://gmatclub.com/forum/math-absolut ... 86462.html

Hope this helps!!!

Thank you guys, so why using |-2| instead of 2 directly? This is kind of useless
