Sorry- That is totally wrong. You could even google it but that would have been against "code of ethics".

Its not Carlos- He was never the richest one anyway. Its Mukesh Ambani from Reliance Industries, India.

Oooh... One GMAT advice for you. Never side with the extremes. This is from wiki...

Quote:
On April 11, 2007, Forbes reported that telecommunications magnate Carlos Slim Helú had risen to become the world's second richest man.[2] Later, the Wall Street Journal on August 4, 2007 and Fortune Magazine on August 6, 2007 reported that Carlos Slim Helú had topped Bill Gates' position as the wealthiest person in the world.[3][4][5] Due to exchange rates, stock valuations, and the overall impossibility of selling all shares at an equal price, the top three placeholders are statistically indistinguishable.[citation needed] The combined net worth of the list is US$3.5 trillion, a US$900 billion increase from 2006.[6]

I acknowledge that Mukesh could have become no. 1. The way Indian stock market has marched from 5000 to 20000 is just unprecedented. I wish I had money to invest. There is every chance that he is indeed the no. 1 now. But at least, I am not TOTALLY wrong :)

Very disappointed :( .. got dinged at Langone Spring 2008.

My profile:

Male, 36
12 yrs IT
Undergrad : 63% from Indian Univ.
GMAT: 700 (Q:51, V:36, AWA:5.5)
Recos: Pretty decent (from current supervisor and a previous supervisor)
Option: Weeknight Washington sq and Weekend Washington Sq.
Applied : Sept 13th
Notified: Oct 30th

Earlier had applied to Fall 2007 (full-time) and had got dinged.

I wrote in my goals about pursuing Product Management, since I am working on the product development side in IT for the past 7 yrs.

Any ideas what could have gone wrong with my app ? Thx. in advance.

I am really sorry to hear that. Product management is a very broad field and can include IT and non IT products. It depends how specific you were in your goals etc. If your goal was to move into a non IT role then they could have seen that as a transition which is a big no for Langone.

That's my best guess

Thanks for your response.

I was initially under the impression that to make a transition either laterally in the same company, or to a different industry, such as Finance, full-time MBA is the way to go. But the part-time alumni as well as the general talk in the info-session proved me wrong. After talking to a Langone alumni during a info-session at Washington Sq. I learnt that part-time MBA can either help u nurture/ enhance your current position, or give you potential for a lateral transition in the company.

langone08, if you don't mind sharing, what did you write as your goals, in your essay?

Sorry to hear that sujayb. Your profile looks pretty good and your GMAT score is excellent. It is difficult to tell why you were not accepted but essays play a big role in the admission decision and I would suggest that you take a look at your essays again and try to find any inconsistency in message across them. They are your only opportunity to stand out (especially essay 3). Again, it is very hard to tell what went wrong but I hope that you do not give up and try again.

Though I personally did not use any 3rd party professional help with my application, some people swear by it. You might want to consider that as well.

Appreciate your response and advice wizofoz.
Any suggestions / ideas what I could have done different in Essay 3. I wrote an essay introducing my personal characteristics, including my professional achievements. Did I make a mistake by including my professional achievements in this essay? Thx.

Well that's what they've said in all their information sessions and events I've been to. I've had the chance to talk to some alumni and they all say that Langone does not look favorably upon career switchers..its a big no no. That said, if you are in IT and looking to say work for Google managing their suite of products then in my opinion its not a career switch. However from IT you want to go work in Brand Management or Investment Banking then I believe Langone discourages that. So to answer your question, yes they are looking for career enhancers not necessarily in the same job but in the same or closely related field.

Ofcourse there are always exceptions.

Hey Sujay

Students do make a transition in the part time program. However, from what I've heard from the Langone folks, officially they discourage it. But once in the program there is no one to stop you from making one. When I say transition I mean from say an IT role to Investment banking. If you change industries but stick within the technology arena thats not a transition.

I'm in marketing and looking to stick with it. I'll be happy to help you in anyway I can. I'm no admissions guru but if you want to bounce some ideas around pm me.

Sorry to hear that sujayb. I'm just curious as to what made you change your mind to switch from fulltime MBA to part-time MBA within such a short period of time? I think for top programs like Stern, they want people who knows what they really want even though it's not explicit.

Good question. I initially applied to the fulltime program, not knowing that lateral transition from IT product development to product strategy does not require a fulltime program. Also, I realized later on, that my age does not fit the general profile of candidates getting into a fulltime program at Stern. The fulltime application, I realized, was a mistake.

Thx. in advance. :)

From my experience(or lack of it), I believe one should go the unconventional route. Well... if you had only 2 days to write your essay, I think you'd be forced to.

In my goals essay, I just wrote down

My short term goals are

1.X
2. Y
3. Z

My long term goals

1. A
2. B
3. C

I thought a limit of 250 words was unreasonable on their end. If I tried to explain any of those in detail, it crossed 250 lines quite easily.

As far as career switching, I am also in IT and the first thing I mentioned was that I wanted to move to the consulting industry. But the second thing I mentioned is that I want to move back to my country. So I guess they didnt care :)

For Essay 3: I am a big fan of social networking websites. Like orkut, I just asked my friends to write testimonials for me. They were very informal but they were genuine.

I wrote my own "about me" column and watched how hopelessly it differs from what my friends think.

One of them said something like:

"His short term goals are to have as many girl friends as possible and his long term goal is to marry none of them. So MBA is his immediate requirement to manage this mess"

There were some making fun of my fashion sense, some making fun of my "driving" adventures(quite a few citations/tickets and accidents) and everyone about how much I talk. I resisted my temptation to edit those. I just chose the ones I liked.

When I submitted it to be reviewed by my friends, I got a binary response. Some loved it because it made a great read, some hated it because it wasnt formal. It was a gamble.

I would rather let the package be reviewed by some friends who know you than seek professional help. Please do sound lively and enthusiastic rather than the usual "professional" tone. They also need some break while reading a whole bunch of mundane statements from traditional essays.

Just my two cents!!!

PS : Please dont mind my grammar. I know it has gone for a toss. I just did not have the time to proofread.

Hey everyone-I'm happy to report that this afternoon, I received notification that I was admitted to the Washington Square weeknights program (1st choice). My vitals are re-posted below:

Submitted appilcation on Sept 12
GMAT: 630 (Q: 45/78%, V: 31/61%, AWA: 6.0/95%)
UGPA: 3.2 / Engineering & Business / Average school
Some masters-level course work
WE: 1 yr tech consulting, 3 yrs Tax/Transfer Pricing analyst at a big Pharma

Elation, shock, disblief followed by relief...that's the best way for me to describe the past hour. I really had my doubts throughout the application process and those doubts really kicked into high gear as the wait dragged on. I don't know what I would have done without this board!

With what I considered boderline academic credentials (GMAT & GPA), I really think my fairly unique work experience helped as did my essays, which I spent a considerable amount of time perfecting...but I gave up trying to figure out the AdCom a while ago. There is just no way to know what they are really thinking.

Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear back and I really feel for those that did not receive good news.
