Hi friends
I have recently received an admission offer frm Langone. My stats 7+workex, 720 GMAT and 3.0 GPA. I have a few doubts about what the program offers:
1. What are the job prospects available to part timers? How much of an option is there to make career switches (though not a 180 degree switch)?
2. I am not a company sponsored candidate. How worth is it to shell the 100k frm my pocket?
3. How much of workload for part-timers?
3a. Can you afford to complete your course during weekends itself? Or is weekday classes an unavoidable thing?
4. Is it the same degree that is conferred to both FTs and PTs or will my degree certificate say 'PART TIME'?
Finally, 2 fundamental questions:
5. Is it true that the campus recruitment is offered for part-timers? The stern website does not say so, but I see a businessweek article quoting otherwise
6. What about the holiday breaks? What are generally the periods during which we would not have classes?
Could you pls provide your inputs, in case you have already done the research? Thank you very much.
Congratz on the offer.
1. From your question 2, it looks like you are eligible for all FT presentations and job opportunities. But make sure you are aware of all the requirements. You may have to shell out a few vacations to attend the presentations. But thats better than not having an option. Career switches are always possible, it is entirely up to you to use MBA as a platform.
2. It depends. It is a very difficult question to answer. There are many who think it's worth it and dont regret it. There are a lot many who dont think it's worth it and dont worry about GMAT/MBA. I am a sponsored candidate but that is still a good 40k out of my pocket because I have to pay taxes on the 100k that my company is paying. So, it is only 60k more if you want to look at it this way.
3. So far from what I've heard from my friends, the work load is no joke at NYU. I expect the worst. But from my experience at grad school, I think 6 credits + FT job is a lot better than 12 credits and 20 hrs part time job. That was hell !!!
4. I am sure it is possible. Many people do that. But I chose weekdays simply because I could not foresee three years of no weekends. I might go crazy if that ever happens to me. It is again just a personal choice. If there was none, I think I would have definitely chosen weekends.
5. Yes
Now to your "fundamental" questions:
1. Yes. But, Please talk to the admissions department. Email the admission officers. Please let me know if you want their email IDs. I am sure the only set of people who can make you feel comfortable regarding this are the folks at NYU. If you get a response from them, please post it here for the benefit of others.
2. I believe it's the spring break week(mid march), mid may week(at the end of spring sem), thanksgiving week(Nov end), christmas and new year week. You can also choose to not take the intensive classes once in a while. That'll give you about 3 weeks off. In short, you make your own breaks. That's the flexibility a PT program offers.
I am sure you knew the answer to most of these questions and are just trying to make sure. These are hardly the type of questions that one would worry about after going through the torture of GMAT, essays and the agonizing wait to hear back.
I am sure you'll take the right decision and join us in the classroom. See you there!!!
