Hi Experts,

I am deeply perplexed because of this question. What is the function of "join", is it acting as a verb? I am unable to understand the structure of any of the answer choices, please help me understand it.

Thanks,

This is a brilliant one with a subltle list, warranting parallelism
Obese patients who ...then there is a list..read it as
Who exercise, who have a prescribed diet and who join ..
Now looking at the choices.
A says lose weight quicker ..lose quickly is the right one. So incorrect
B has tense issues..required and lost ...incorrect. as the sentence talks about patients who do ....will require...it is a prediction for future
C has everything right...who execrcise, have...and join...parallel..Also the tense matches with the rest of the sentence. The comparison at the end is also perfect
D has subject verb disagreement..Patients requires is wrong
E has tense issues...patients who joined will lose is incorrect...Also lose quicker is incorrect.
Hence C

Hi there,

To answer this question lets first analyse the initial statement:
Patients -- exercise and join
who exercise, [have a prescribed diet to follow],
and join a weight-loss support group will - a list o verbs that will happen
require less medical oversight,
lose weight quicker,
and maintain their weight loss better (maintain their weight)
than
-- everything is fine here --
perfect so no error so far!
Next lets look at the comparison : maintain their ... compared to "those who..."
this doesn't sound right we are comparing a verb with a category of people -- comparison is wrong-- we need to compare actions to actions.
C is the correct answer

Hi...for those who are confused about the usage 'do'...
Look at these examples on logical comparison..
Covid 19 has affected the world much more than any other virus has...(action compared with action...has refers to the action)
This can also be written as
Covid 19 has affected much more than has any other virus... ( action compared with action..position of ' has' changed)
Similarly in C the comparison is...'Obese people maintain their weight loss better than those who try to lose weight on their own do'
But it has been twisted as ' than do those who try to lose weight..'
Ultimately the comparison is between two actions obese people maintaining weight loss and others doing the same on their own...
Hope this clarifies

Obese patients who exercise, have a prescribed diet to follow, and join a weight-loss support group will require less medical oversight, lose weight quicker, and maintain their weight loss better than those who try to lose weight on their own.

A. join a weight-loss support group will require less medical oversight, lose weight quicker, and maintain their weight loss better than -- this is comparing the action of "require" with "people who lose weight"
B. join a weight-loss support group required less medial oversight, lost weight more quickly, and maintain their weight loss better than -- same as A, verb tenses are not parallel as well
C. join a weight-loss support group will require less medical oversight, lose weight more quickly, and maintain their weight loss better than do -- CORRECT, action-to-action comparison of both groups of people
D. join a weight-loss support group requires less medical oversight, lose weight more quickly, and maintain their weight loss better than -- wrong SVA, same error as A
E. joined a weight-loss support group will require less medical oversight, lose weight quicker, and maintain their weight loss better than do -- parallel elements in list use similar comparative keywords (more/less in all elements)

Answer: D

Let's try to get rid of modifiers and find the skeleton structure of the sentence.

Obese people who ... require less oversight... than those who ...

In short, this is: A will require less B than C.

The comparison is between requirement of B by A and requirement of B by C. That is not clear in this sentence. It seems here that the comparison is between B and C.
So instead it should be:

A will require less B than does C - Now it is clear that the comparison is between the two requirements. You need the verb.

So our sentence should be: Obese people who ... require less oversight... than do those who ...

Obese patients who exercise will require less oversight than those who try on their own.
Obese patients who exercise = some patients
those who try on their own = other patients

Some patients require less oversight than other patients.

It is ambiguous.

Some patients require less oversight than they require other patients. NO

therefore we need a helping verb to compare actions.
