OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

The initial sentence sounds pretty good, but we probably have one question after reading it: who is "they" (in "their inventories")? It's not clear whether this pronoun refers to shoppers, stores in malls, or online retailers. Let's see which answer choice fixes this.
Choices (C), (D), and (E) all replace "their" with "online retailers'," which makes sense, so we'll need to look at the differences between these. After we read through them, we see that (C) is the clearest. Choice (D) might be tempting, but since the phrase starts out in the future tense with "will cease," it would be simpler and clearer if our answer just used "grow" instead of "have grown."

The correct answer is Choice (C).

Could the difference between If and Whether be a split?
Although in informal writing and speech the two words are often used interchangeably, in formal and business writing there is a distinction between those two.

The rule is to use 'if'when you have a conditional sentence and 'whether' when you are showing that two alternatives are possible. So yeah, splits between two do exist. But while approaching the answerchoices one shouldn't blindly look at splits. It's wise to analyze each and every answer choice and eliminate the incorrect choices on stronger grounds. The sentence should communicate the intended meaning and should be grammatically correct.
