Optional Essay Question [#permalink]

Hi guys,

I am wondering if I should write the optional question: If you feel there are extenuating circumstances of which the committee should be aware of, please explain them here(inconsistent of questionable academic performance).

I had a rough freshman year because school was down my list of priorities and I barely attended class(I was immature) as a result I ended up with a 2.7GPA including a 2.5 for both intro econ classes(macro and micro) and a 2.0 GPA for both Calculus(1 and 2) classes as well as 3.0 in many other non-quantitative intro classes. I ended up my college career with a 3.8GPA during the last year and a half when most of my classes were upper level Econ courses (many are quantitative intensive). My overall GPA was a 3.4 with an Econ and Poli Sci GPA of 3.65(econ and poli sci were my majors) and ended up in the National Economics Honor society because of my upper level Econ GPA of 3.8. Based on the following info and considering that I finished very strong do you think that I need to address my freshman year in this essay? I just don't want to call attention to it if there is no need. Thanks in advance!

Cris

Cris,

The last statement you made is an important one. "I just don't want to call attention to it if there is no need."

Your overall GPA is strong and you clearly have achived multiple academic honors. As such, I would be reticent to draw attention to your Freshman year. Scott often says that committees are much more forgiving of a strong academic close than a weak academic beginning. This is definitely the case.

While I wouldn't recommend using the optional essay for this purpose, I would be prepared to respond to any question I received in regard to your first year during an interview.... but it sounds like you already have a good response for that.
