Any way, regarding 2nd essay for Oxford, you said that "Some people who have interesting hobbies or community involvement, told about that.". I am not sure if it is good idea, because essay asks you to mention a world event or a book -- not your community/hobbies.

I agree with you - not just any hobby or community involvement will do here. But around some of them - especially those with strong social impact - you may build a very interesting story. The question asks for 'recent development, world event or book' - so, I'd say, it's a matter of interpretation what to call 'a development'. Some political/social movements, IMHO, could be seen as both 'world scale events' or 'developments'.

In any case, no matter what you choose - book, event or some movement - I believe your essay will be strongest if the issue is indeed personally connected with you. The adcom are curious to see what was so important for you that it seriously influenced your thinking - in other words, they want to know what kind of person you are. So, in the end, this is largely a story of personal change, not of some event or book (IMHO, again).

I totally agree with greenoak here. Although I am not a Oxford admit (awaiting decision), I think what you should do is try to set yourself apart in essay 2. The important thing about this essay is not what development, world event or book you choose. Also "recent" is open to interpretation. I know an alum who wrote about a movement in the 1980's. The important bit is how that influenced you and why? Strong personal connection + even a tie up to your goals could be useful.

I have Oxford interview tomorrow. Can I get some last minute advise with people who have already gone through the experience? The interviewer is an HR from Barclays Capital and have worked with various banks before.

Thanks,

HI Abhay,

goodluck for that tomorrow. There are plenty of interview experiences on accepted.com for oxford. Mine was similar in the sense that there weren't any difficult questions. Just why MBA, why Oxford and what will I bring to the class. Know these answers cold.

cheers,

buff

Hi Abhay,

I can join my good wishes to Buffdaddy’s :)

Also, you may expect some questions regarding your professional field (especially if your interviewer’s background is similar to yours), and, perhaps, about current economic situation.

As for further advice - aside from accepted.com, you may also check old pagalguy threads and even BW (somebody has posted his/her Said interview experience there recently ).

Good luck! :)

Hi devil420! I withdrew from Oxford a few weeks after the admit, but my original college choices were Trinity and Exeter. I did not receive any scholarship notifications before my withdrawal.

Hi Devil,

Well, I'm yet have to pay the deposit :( - and really hope to do so this week. So, I didn't think about colleges much on this stage. And I got no schollie either - but I never thought I would get anything from Said: just wrong type of profile.

Regarding colleges - I looked through Said Intranet forum, and saw the mentioning of Christ Church as first preference several times (quite predictable) ... and also of Green Templeton (convenience for MBA). I don't know what the result was for those who applied.

Also, I saw assorted Internet discussions with the description of Oxford colleges' stereotypes, such as:

Balliol College: Full of left-wingers.
Oriel College: Full of Tories.
Queen's College: Full of northerners.
Jesus College: Full of Welsh people.
Merton College: Full of workoholics.
Christ Church College: Full of your stereotypical "rah" oxbridge students, who after a spiffingly good game of croquet go and drink lashings of exceedinlgy expensive fine spirits.
Trinity College: Rahs
Corpus Christi: Small and nonchalant
Lincoln: Friendly, apathetic, lots of historians, good food
Wadham: Liberal, state schoolers, lots of homosexuals
etc.

You may find more full list if you wish - but the credibility of these statements is, well, questionable. They are just 'stereotypes', in the end. Btw, the stereotype for Said Business School, according to one of these discussions, is "rich Americans, Chinese and Arabs"... So, you see what all this is worth

And here's the mentioning of rivalries between the colleges (from wiki):

Exeter College and Jesus College
Brasenose College and Lincoln College
The Queen's College and St Edmund Hall
Balliol College and Trinity College
Christ Church and Pembroke College
Keble College and St. John's College
St Catherine's College and Magdalen College

Btw, where you applied yourself? Or you will tell when accepted?

Trinity College: Rahs

Hmm, maybe it is a good thing that I did not end up living in Trinity. I enjoy cheap beer, and I can hardly play cricket properly, let alone croquet.

Honestly, I don't think anything is wrong with any of those colleges. What is 'Full of Rahs' for one person, might be 'Friendly and Social' for another

And I have good news at last - I paid that deposit finally :-D Haven't received any confirmation from Oxford yet, but I hope that everything will be fine.

I wonder, who else from Oxford R1 admits has already made the matriculation decision?

Thanks, Buffdaddy!

But the admissions process in Oxbridge schools has its nuances, as you soon (I'm sure) will find for yourself. After you've been accepted to the MBA programme and have paid the deposit, your application still has to go through the college admission process - and the latter may take from three weeks to as long as several months (for Oxford, at least). Only after you receive an unconditional offer of place from your college (it means they must be satisfied with your ability to pay the remaining course, college, university fees and living expenses), you may proceed to obtaining a UK visa.

That's how I understand the situation. Perhaps, according to new visa rules something has changed, but I doubt that the requirements were made less strict.

So, at this stage, I have another admission adventure ahead of me :) And I'm a bit worried starting two months later than other R1 admits.

Thats a BIG call greenoak. My odds at this stage are very low. Oxford publicaly said that R2 apps were up 30%, so the admit rates post interview of yesteryear are no longer applicable. Although if I am lucky enough to get an admit at Oxford, hopefully I won't have to go through the visa issue, as my current visa which expires in 2012 should be good enough.

In terms of colleges, a college that has a decent rugby team will suit me well :)

That's true - but what about the yield, with the loan scheme no longer available?
Besides, you still may hear something from Cambridge WL.
Anyways, it's only one week of waiting. I really wish you all the best of luck (and honestly think that your chances are rather good :) ).

Buffdaddy, I'm the same boat..counting the seconds till the 27th. I thought the interview went well, but who knows. I felt fantastic walking out of it...my first reaction was that I nailed it..but thinking back, I kept coming up with little 'hmm, maybe I shouldn't have said that..or maybe I should have said this instead' moments. Ultimately, I feel like I was at the positive end of the spectrum and didn't hurt my chances. I thought about the numbers quite a bit..they said they interview 60% of applicants..but I don't know if that means they offer 60% interviews, but only a portion accept and actually follow through with it..or if that's the number of actual interviews..my guess is interview offers go to 60%. Looks like they gave out 340 admissions offers for 225 spots..this year they may up the number of offers to counteract the loss of the loan scheme. I also think some of the interviews go terribly wrong. During my interview day, one poor fellow had such poor english that he said most of the 30 minutes was spent on a just a couple basic questions. So my feeling is that they'll end up getting approximatley 500 decent candidate interviews and give out 350 offers for 225 spots..about 70%. I don't have a real grasp on how must losing the loan scheme will affect the number of offers given. I suppose a good portion of folks who apply for Oxford also apply for LBS and Cambridge and with those schools still offering loans, it will definately be a consideration for those with offers from both. I'd be curious to hear what any list members think about it. In the mean time, I'm taking a scuba diving trip this weekend and plan to sleep through as much of next week as possible. Bring on the 27th.

some of these statistics do worry me. I actually had a pretty weak interview experience (really kicking myself now) so am def thinking the worst. Hoping the first half of the interview which went well made up for absolute horrid second half. A couple of my answers were piss poor so def not optimistic with oxford chances.

Oh well here's hoping for the best next week.
