I read some old threads, almost 6-8 years old. Some say it does and some (and my consultant) say it doesn't.

Anyone else didn't waive their rights?

No way to be really sure.

People do get accepted even without waiving the right, but it is quite difficult to tell if it affects their judgement or not. I would say no, since they truly look at the entirety of your profile to evaluate you.

My understanding is that you get to see the letter only after you get admitted.
So it shouldn't be a factor.

I've been secretly trolling for a few days now. Seems about an appropriate time to try and spark the R2 conversation!

I'll start with one ;) I'm a female applicant, are there many of us out there? And moreover, female ratios in the class across the board have climbed of late (+40%!!), while lady applicants still hover around the mid-30's. Thoughts?

Just finished my application! I'm afraid to hit submit. I don't think that the gender ratio is as big of an issue for HBS, unfortunately. They get their pick of the crop.

For those in R1 who were interviewed/accepted - do all interviews take place at HBS? Is there another location for applicants on the west coast?

And for those who were accepted - did all of you visit campus beforehand? Not sure if that's something the adcom takes into consideration...

My interview was my first time on campus, but the adcom didn't even ask. I don't think they care as long they can tell you've done your research. The on-campus activities they put on during interview days are also very much designed to introduce you to the campus if you haven't visited before

Did not visit campus before the interview. Although I believe it is very important to visit campus, especially to get a more accurate feeling of what it would be like to attend there, it is far from being essential.

FROM HBS Admissions Blog: Countdown to January 6!
Greetings from a well-rested and excited Dillon Team! We loved our holiday break, but are VERY ready for Round Two to get underway.

Here's the scoop on what will happen this week:

The application deadline is 12:00 noon (Boston time) on Wednesday, January 6. We are not reading any applications until then so our start time is right after that deadline. We do not, repeat DO NOT, shut off the application system until every application in the process of submitting has been received. Your confirmation comes not from us, but from the system. If you are able to submit, we've got it.

And then we need to talk about recommenders. There are always stragglers. We will continue to accept recommendations all this week. We will begin to review your application when one recommendation has been received. Remember, it's your responsibility to ensure both recommendations have been submitted - we won't send out any incomplete emails.

So then what?

We need Wednesday afternoon to figure out what we've got and from where. By Friday, we'll post here a list of hub cities where we will be interviewing. We'll also give you the plan for sending out interview invitations.

And, of course, we're here if you need us. If you are experiencing technical difficulties, please email slatesupport@hbs.edu.

And Happy New Year!!

Dee

Military Veteran applicant with an abhorrent GPA 2.81, and an unexciting GMAT 630 hitting the submit button tomorrow evening. Tried to articulate my situation via the additional comments section as best I could. Lets hope it helps the admissions team when reviewing my app. Good luck to everyone brave enough to take the leap of faith and apply! Wish you all the best!!!

Fingers crossed for all R2 applicants.

Assuming you did the final touches on the essay during the holidays break so just relax and let the waiting game begin!

Did anyone use contractions and just really informal language when writing their essay. I'm just torn because it is supposed to read as if you were saying it orally, but I don't want to fall into a trap where I get hit on not being extremely grammatically correct. I will probably go back through and break down all the contractions and tighten up the language to be safe, but it seems as though it should be the other way around.

It's totally fine to use more conversational language for the HBS "introduce yourself" response because -- as you said -- if you get in you'll be reading them out loud and you're supposed to sound like yourself. I would obviously avoid something like "ain't," but other than that, things like "it's," "they're," "isn't/wasn't," etc are OK.

Good luck!
