Hello najsh2 - Please find the explanation as per below.

North America’s carbon footprint is growing larger in relation to Europe’s; the amount of carbon dioxide emitted per capita in the United States is up to three times of Britain’s emission.

The sentence here is comparing - the amount of CO2 emitted per capita in US Vs the amount of CO2 emitted per capita in Britain

(A) up to three times of Britain’s emission ====> This is an illogical comparison - comparing the amount of CO2 emitted per capita in US with the entire emission of Britain

(B) as much as thrice that of Britain’s emission ====> This is an illogical comparison - comparing the amount of CO2 emitted per capita in US with the entire emission of Britain

(C) as much as three times that emitted in Britain ====> Correct - As it is comparing the amount of CO2 emitted per capita in US Vs the amount of CO2 emitted per capita in Britain

(D) up to three times what Britons emit ====> This is an illogical comparison - comparing the amount of CO2 emitted per capita in US with emission done by British people. This does not make any sense

(E) up to thrice the British emission ====> This is an illogical comparison - comparing the amount of CO2 emitted per capita in US with the entire emission of British people

Hope this helps!

Hi,. can you explain again why B is wrong.
as much as thrice that of Britain’s emission. We have that, which refers to the amount of C02.

The pronoun "that" does not have a suitable antecedent. The noun "carbon dioxide" cannot be the antecedent, because in that case the sentence would make no sense: "...thrice carbon dioxide of Britain’s emission.." is meaningless.

Also if the pronoun "that" refers to the word "amount", the meaning conveyed would be wrong: the comparison would then be between "amount of carbon dioxide" and "amount of emission", not between "amount of carbon dioxide" and "amount of carbon dioxide".

Hi,
Can u kindly explain what does that refer to in option c. If it refers to the amount of CO2. The sentence stands as North America’s carbon footprint is growing larger in relation to Europe’s; the amount of carbon dioxide emitted per capita in the United States is as much as three times that( the amount of C02) emitted in Britain.

Similarly, in option B, cant we assume that stands for amount of C02.
North America’s carbon footprint is growing larger in relation to Europe’s; the amount of carbon dioxide emitted per capita in the United States is as much as thrice that (the amount of C02) of Britain’s emission. Logically, C looks more parallel to me. emitted in the United States.......that emitted in Britain.

I believe that "amount" and "as much as" can never be used together.
Is the question correct? Can you give me the solution and the explanation for the solution?
thank you.

sunny91 Yes, in C, "that" refers to the amount of emissions. We're comparing the amounts in two countries. However, in B, we have a redundancy problem. It's basically saying "thrice the amount of emissions of Britain's emissions." This makes no sense! (Also, side note: "thrice" has fallen out of usage in modern US English.)

It may also help to look at the official question from which this was copied: https://gmatclub.com/forum/laos-has-a-l ... 07156.html

chesstitans There's nothing wrong with using "as much as" with "amount." If you've seen a question where that creates a problem, let's look at it.

Hi,
If I am not wrong B is wrong for other reasons.

the total amount of pollutant emitted annually by vehicles at O'Hare International Airport is twice as much annually as is emitted by the motor vehicles in Chicago metropolitan area. Here, annually is incorrectly placed.
Correct construction will be- the total amount of pollutant emitted annually by vehicles at O'Hare International Airport is twice as much as is emitted annually by the motor vehicles in Chicago metropolitan area.
Choice D is far clearer- the total amount of pollutant emitted annually by vehicles at O'Hare International Airport is twice that (the total amount of pollutant) emitted annually by the motor vehicles in Chicago metropolitan area.
Let me know your thoughts.
