Then why did they put me on waitlist if they eventually intended to send an interview invite?

It could be that they didn't have enough time to make a decision on your application and moved it to the next round. Did you submit your application late?

I received mail about decision update on portal at around 2.30 am IST. When I opened it was all there on portal.
