Official Explanation

He was more popular after he had started singing compared to his writing career, singer/songwriter Barry Manilow still prefers writing to singing.

A) He was more popular after he had started singing compared to his writing career
B) Being more popular after he had started singing as compared to his writing career
C) Though he is more popular as a singer than as a writer
D) Although he was more popular after starting to singing when compared to his writing career
E) He had been more popular after starting to sing than in his writing career

This sentence deals with modifiers, flow, and appropriate comparisons. First, we need to make sure that the phrase is actually a modifier and not a complete sentence. Next, the GMAT always prefers concise sentences, so let’s also focus on that. Differences are highlighted in the text.

A) He was more popular after he had started singing compared to his writing career
This is INCORRECT. This is a complete sentence instead of a modifier. Also, the two items being compared are not parallel.

B) Being more popular after he had started singing as compared to his writing career
This is INCORRECT. This sentence is incorrect because it is redundant; saying “as compared to” when comparison is already indicated by “more popular” is unnecessary. It’s clearer and more concise to stick with “more X than Y” instead of “more X as compared to Y.”

C) Though he is more popular as a singer than as a writer
This is CORRECT. This sentence makes the most sense. It starts with a clause that adequately modifies the rest of the sentence, and “more popular as a singer than as a writer” is both correct usage and parallel.

D) Although he was more popular after starting to singing when compared to his writing career
This is INCORRECT. This sentence is incorrect because it is redundant; saying “when compared to” when comparison is already indicated by “more popular,” is unnecessary. Also, “starting to singing” isn’t parallel to “his writing career.”

E) He had been more popular after starting to sing than in his writing career
This is INCORRECT. This is a complete sentence instead of a modifier. Also, “starting to sing” isn’t parallel to “in his writing career.”

There you have it - option C is the correct choice!

A) He was more popular after he had started singing compared to his writing career — need a modifier before Barry and not a clause. Eliminate. Leading to a run on sentence.

B) Being more popular after he had started singing as compared to his writing career — being is incorrect here.

C) Though he is more popular as a singer than as a writer — keep. Correct.

D) Although he was more popular after starting to singing when compared to his writing career - although is correctly used to show contrast. Non underlined portion uses present tense. We need present tense in the modifier too. Eliminate since this uses past tense (was)

E) He had been more popular after starting to sing than in his writing career — same as D. Past perfect used which is just wrong. We don’t have sequence of actions here.
