D seems to be most parallel, since it says "reducing", "relaxing" and "regulating". Seems quite straightforward.

Though option D is grammatically correct, Option D and E have a very suttle difference.
while option D suggests that it is the FOOD itself which reduce anxiety etc.., option E makes it clear that FOOD is acting as a means of achieving lower anxiety etc..
option E is right answer IMO.

But why can't food itself reduce anxiety etc.? Moreover, this is what the original sentence says.

So, I feel that E in that sense actually changes the meaning of the original sentence.

I think you are right. After reading through this small article on usage of meansof/meansto , i feel E Is wrong.

Foods high in tryptophan, an amino acid that is a precursor to serotonin, can help people to fall asleep by reducing anxiety, relaxing the brain, and in regulating the sleep cycle.

A. reducing anxiety, relaxing the brain, and in regulating

B. means of reducing anxiety, relaxing the brain, and in the regulation of

C. reducing anxiety, relaxing the brain, and regulation of

D. reducing anxiety, relaxing the brain, and regulating

E. means of reducing anxiety, relaxing the brain, and regulating

Only (D) has the correct parallelism usage hence (D) is the correct answer !! :-D

My confusion is with the usage of the comma before ''and''. "...relaxing the brain, and...".
Is it correct to add a comma before "and".

When we introduce a list of items [INDEPENDENT CLAUSES] in which each item is separated by comma, we put a comma before 'and' after which we introduce the last item of the list.

Re: Foods high in tryptophan, an amino acid that is a precursor to seroton [#permalink]
Foods high in tryptophan, an amino acid that is a precursor to serotonin, can help people to fall asleep by reducing anxiety, relaxing the brain, and in regulating the sleep cycle.

A is incorrect because the prepositional "in regulating" now suggests trpto helps in regulating instead of regulating the sleep cycle actually aiding someone in failing asleep. Simply put, it violates parallelism, but there is much more logic at play.

B - same issues arise in the use of the prepositional "in the..". In addition, "by means of reducing" and "by reducing" are exactly the same in this context. Here we are stating 3 mechanisms by which tryptophan can aid someone. Incorrect

C is incorrect as the action noun "regulation" now states "by regulation of.." this doesn't make sense. More technically you could state that action nouns aren't parallel to simple gerunds.

D. clearly communicates the 3 mechanisms that help people to fall asleep. Correct

E again by means of is redundant.

Hello souvik101990,

Although this question is pretty straightforward, and hence the majority of people have got it right, I have a query wrt option (C).

In parallelism concept, following preference order is widely taught - Noun of Noun > Verb-ing of Noun > Verb-ing + Noun

Between regulating and regulation of, shouldn't we prefer the latter since it's the noun of noun version?

Look forward to hearing from you!

A. reducing anxiety, relaxing the brain, and in regulating

B. means of reducing anxiety, relaxing the brain, and in the regulation of

C. reducing anxiety, relaxing the brain, and regulation of

D. reducing anxiety, relaxing the brain, and regulating

E. means of reducing anxiety, relaxing the brain, and regulating

A list of three things is underlined in the original sentence, indicating the need to test
the sentence for parallelism. According to the non-underlined portion of the sentence,
the three verbs starting each item in the list indicate how the substance (tryptophan)
helps people to fall asleep: by "reducing", "relaxing" and "regulating." At first glance, it
appears that these 3 verbs - each ending in "ing" - are nicely parallel. However,
consider that the list is introduced by the preposition "by." It should read "by x, y, and
z" where x, y, and z are parallel. Instead, the list reads "by x, y, and in z." The use of
the word "in" to introduce the third element in the list throws off the parallelism and
creates a nonsensical phrase: "by . . .in regulating."
(A) This choice is incorrect because it repeats the original sentence.
(B) This choice does not correct the original parallelism error; it still uses "in" to
introduce the third item in the list. Moreover, that third item--"the regulation of"--is no
longer in the "ing" form, further distorting the parallel structure. Finally, the choice
creates a new problem. "By" is sufficient to introduce the three items in the list; "by
means of" is redundant.
(C) This choice correctly omits the word "in" when introducing the third item on the
list. However, the phrase "regulation of" is no longer parallel with the "ing" endings of
the first two items on the list.
(D) CORRECT. This choice corrects the original error by omitting the word "in" when
introducing the third item on the list. The three items now follow the parallel structure
"by x, y, and z."
(E) This choice corrects the original error by omitting the word "in" when introducing
the third item on the list. The three items now follow the parallel structure "by x, y, and
z." The choice creates a new problem, however. "By" is sufficient to introduce the
three items in the list; "by means of" is redundant.
